How do I create Brady bunch effect using Hitthebongs avisynth masks? Posted: 31 Dec 2007 09:50 PM |
| I am using avisynth the do this effect, but I can't figure out how to get all 9 videos on one page. I have one on the top corner of the screen. Can someone provide me with instructions on doing this with the avis masks and overlays? |

I thought I'd give it a go too....here is what I did. First, I am on XP and have Avisynth installed and also have Virtual Dub. I am assuming you downloaded the 'Cool Avisynth Scripts-Set 1' that is one of HitTheBongo's offerings on his site. After it was downloaded into a Brady Bunch folder, I unzipped the download and it produced a folder named 'Avisynth Projects'....it contained two folders of Masks and PngOverlays...also 9 vids plus border loop...and 14 scripts of various kinds. Two used were 3x3 with borders, and 3x3 with border loop. The 9 videos were deleted and replaced with 9 of my own, all of about 20-30 seconds in length and WMV format (WMV format). Each was renamed to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 same as the original vids.
Next, right click on a selected script...(for example try the 3x3 with borders one.) Choose 'open with' and then select from list and browse to find virtual dub and it will open with the script. You could also open virtual dub and do a 'file' 'run script', but some of the time it wouldn't find the script accurately...but had no problem right clicking and browsing to virtual dub to get it open. Then you need to do a 'file' and 'save as avi' to render the resulting video. I did that with several and imported them into MM to make this vid below. The second title should say '3x3 with border loop' since I forgot to change the title. The last section is from the download of the Brady simulation from HTB's site. The other scripts (14 total) all use the masks/overlays in different ways...and you can change the border loop to your own if you wish. After you make vids and edit/redo in Movie Maker, you can go back and delete the original renderings since they will be huge files taking up lots of space.
Figure it out the first time, and you'll be able to understand how it works. Always have liked HTB's creations, and this ranks right up there! Have fun.

Cool Video! I am going to have to mess around and see what I can do. I will try the method you gave me and do it. Sounds pretty easy once you get the hang of it!
Thanx! |

Hi
If you're new to avisynth you might find it useful to go to my Avisynth Page and click on "An Avisynth introduction for new users" It contains a few useful tips and a downloadable project folder with simple test scripts to try and get you started (hopefully).

| ...BTW - If using Virtual Dub to feed the aviscripts in to , it is possible to load the script by just dragging it in to the main virtualdub window . |

| Al, I've been making some small projects with the original and the simulation ones. It takes a smaller bit of learning and trial and error than I originally thought...and your Avisynth page is extremely helpful. At first I had problems because I was renaming vids 1 instead of 01, or the other way around...and some of my vids weren't WMV's...after I got that figured out, everything went well. I was able to drag the script into Media Player Classic, but sometimes had problems opening up in Virtual Dub for processing....but it always has worked if I right click the script and 'open with' and find Virtual Dub that way. I originally didn't think I could do it, but am now really proud of myself...LOL! Not only that, you should also suggest users to get your 'montage' transitions (I consider myself expert with those from way back...ha ha). I just made a vid for a project using those 5 transitions along with quite a few of the BB scripts and they look amazing if even partially matched with the music. Each clip was done separately in full processing mode from Virtual Dub, which I immediately imported to Movie Maker and saved out as a dv-avi clip...I then deleted the huge clip saved from VDub to the AviSynth project file, so I knew where it was. These were all put together in MM later where I could apply various effects/titles, and the montage transitions and others...along with audio. I hope hpmoviemaker1, and all others give this a full try, it is just terrific stuff. And I really like the idea of 'project/template' folders. Thanks for the good work, and keep these coming, even if I'm too scared to try them out at first...LOL have fun. |

Ok...I got the masks and overlays to open using virtual dub. When I right click and select open with, I get a prompt that says there was a filter problem. This occurs when I try to open the 3xLHpanel script. Being a total newbie, does anyone know what this means?
Thanks.
I understood Hitthebongos tutorial after some sleep..LOL, just need help putting in the scripts!

| Try what Al said just before....open up Virtual Dub, and then try dragging the script directly into the Virtual Dub pane and see what happens. Also, be certain not to make the mistakes I made....your vids should be named 01, 02, 03 and so forth, AND they should be WMV format...let us know if it works. Have fun. |

| AVI filter? Be certain your 9 short vids are in WMV format. Save them out of Movie Maker as WMV or convert them with a converter. See if that is the prob. Another alternative would be to get Al's other recommendation...Nic's Encoder...if you can't get it to work correctly. I think my VirtualDub was a bit erratic too...LOL |

OK...one small step at a time to isolate the problem.
First of all did you read the introduction I linked to? Its really important to aquaint yourself with the basics and some of the tools that will make life easier for yourself. Halfway down the page is a project folder to download that contains a couple of scripts. One of the scripts is:
VERSION.avs
This script is a very useful for test purposes as it does not reference any source videos. All it will do when rendered in virtualdub is create a 10 second video displaying what version of avisynth you have. Use this as a practice script. Are you able to open this in virtualdub and then use virtualdub to create a video from it ?
To create the script yourself (a useful exercise I suggest you try now) just right click on your desktop, select New and create a new text document. Now open the text document and type
Version
Now click File in the text doc and save as anythingulike.avs by entering anythingulike.avsin the file name field and All Files in the Save As Type field
You should now have the new script. Are you able to create a video from this script?
Once you've done that look in the project folder I made available for download on the introduction page for the Test.avs script. This script references an included video. Are you able to open this script in virtualdub and save to a video ?
Thanks for the comments BTW Dickmr !

Hi Al.... a quick note about my last use of the BB script. It worked fine in XP but I get a script error when doing the same thing in Vista's Home Basic. The sample scripts that come with AviSynth work fine in Vista... so it's something to scratch my head over someday, not today.
I got past it by doing my project in XP as usual. |

Hi Papajohn
I wish I had VISTA to test this for problems. I know that on a fresh install of XP that a YUV12 decoder like This one was required to view scripts but I don't know if that may be the problem.
My inclination would be to try a simple script like the following to see how it handles one of the source videos from your brady bunch project folder. For example:
DirectshowSource("somevideo.wmv")
Dickmr - are you using XP or VISTA ?

Re: How do I create Brady bunch effect using Hitthebongs avisynth masks? Posted: 04 Jan 2008 04:58 PM |
Ok here is what I did so far:
1. Opened VirtualDub and mplayer2.exe
2. Looked at the tutorial again and re-downloaded the test scripts.
3. Tried to drag the version.avs script and the test video into mplayer2.exe. Says Decompressor not valid.
4. Downloaded the yu codec, installed it, says same thing when I attempt to drag it.
5. Tried open with>virtualdub, nothing.
Hopefully, I can get it figured out. Hitthebongos tutorials were excellent, I understand it perfectly, if I can only ge the *bleeping* thing to open.....

I'm on XP....and I just assumed hpmoviemaker1 was too...?? On Al's introduction to Avisynth stuff where the test download was from, he also has Nic's Encoder listed along with Virtual Dub as one of his suggestions. I just tried the test ones and they worked when I dragged them into MediaPlayerClassic....here is what the open folder looked like when I did that.

| Yes, actually it did open the AVI file. Could I make a copy of the videos I want to use, and convert them to AVI instead of WMV? Then I could make the brady effect, then leave the whole thing AVI? I'll be uploading to Youtube, and they accept .AVI and .WMV files. |

| Do you open the 01.wmv file first, delete the image, and then replace it with your own? Or is there another method to it? I think I am going to look at HTB's tutorial again just to be clear. But at least it finally opened! |

Re: How do I create Brady bunch effect using Hitthebongs avisynth masks? Posted: 04 Jan 2008 09:02 PM |
| ha ha....don't worry, you got it figured out! What I did was make a folder inside the project folder and named it 'holding folder'...and dragged all 9 of the original clips into it. Then I copied all 9 of the vids I wanted (WMV...keep em fairly short)..mine were 15-20 seconds or so and worked ok. Rename your vids the same as the originals that you put in the holding folder...i.e 01, 02 and so on. Each of the scripts has a different way of presenting them. In Virtual Dub I clicked on 'video' and used 'normal recompress'....then did a 'file' 'save avi'....when it was rendered out I imported that clip to Movie Maker and saved it out as dv-avi and then deleted the original one from vdub. Then I did the others that way also. Glad you got it figured out...not having it installed would have been the last thing... ha ha have fun. |

Been under some stress lately, my brain is officially scrambled eggs by now. Got it though, after a few tweakings of my video. God, I feel stupid!
Thanx for the help!

This is cool and looks really very professional.
I downloaded all the programs as instructed. I managed to get to the stage where I test the version.
But I failed at the part where it was supposed to show two videos. When I drag the file into it, I saw an error in red. According to the notes there, it says that if this happens that it means I need to install the HUY code which I did as the same problem remains.
Just wondering, does this work on Vista ?
Thanks
