How to use Internet Explorer filters and transitions with WMM?
Posted: 19 Apr 2005 04:05 AM
Microsoft has a webpage Visual Filters and Transitions Reference listing many visual effects which are possible in Internet Explorer.

Many of these are already available in WMM.
I was wondering if it's possible to use others with some custom XML.
For example there's a Light filter which looks interesting.

There are html examples of how to use the effects but not XML.
The corresponding GUID is not mentioned on those pages as far as I can see.
A quick google found this table of GUIDs.
So the light filter might be {F9EFBEC2-4302-11D2-952A-00C04FA34F05}

I guess filter attributes can be set in XML with the Param tag but it's not clear to me whether we access the filter methods.

Glow,

I have been posting custom effects and transitions on these forums for some of of these filters (like motion blur, stretch etc).

If you search the registry for the ProgID of these filters you will find the corresponding GUID. Furthermore to view the exact interfaces and the GUIDs for those filters you can use oleview utility.

Only those filters can be used with WMM that implement IDXEffect interface. Unfortunately the Light filter doesnt.

Filter methods cannot be called directly; but 'properties' can be.

Thanks Rehan

Looks like I have some homework.
I take it the oleview is ok to use with WinXP? The web page only mentioned Win2000.

Do you think it's possible to use the WMM title DLL as an effect?
In some cases (particularly when there's no text involved) it would be more convenient to have the title as a video effect which stays with a video clip during a transition or when you shift the video clips along the timeline.

There seems to be something special about Title objects... they work slightly differently... I havent worked out exactly how...

I have been trying the other way round... trying to make my custom plugin work as a title. Doesnt work either.

Ok, I think I've got the hang of using the IE filters and transitions now.

Some time ago I did a Circle-in transition using an SMPTE wipe and custom gradient file which was a bit of a pain as it couldn't be posted here as text so I put it on Pegson's site.
I could have done it with a simpler IE Iris transition:

<!--
Circle-in transition using IE Iris transition

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" >

">
<Transition name="$Iris Circle In" iconid="80" >
<Param name="irisstyle" value="CIRCLE" />
<Param name="motion" value="in" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>
