3 way split?
Posted: 12 Apr 2005 11:31 PM
Hi,

Is there anyway to do a 3 way split. I looked at Rehan's 2 way splits, but does anyone know how i can get a 3 way split.

Thanks

You have to do it in two passes as Movie Maker can work with only two videos at one time.

Re: 3 way split?

Why?
It can be 33% - 34% - 33% split with left and right movements so that the centers of the videos align up properly.

Here is some code:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">

<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{DE75D012-7A65-11D2-8CEA-00A0C9441E20}">
<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical 1:2" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.33" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical 2:1" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.66" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>

<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Move Left for 3 way split" iconid="33">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="left" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.44" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Move Right for 3 way split" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="right" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.44" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>

</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste into notepad and save the file with .xml extension in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create folder if necessary. Restart WMM.

Here's a slight modification if you want bars between the sections. You can change the BorderColor and BorderWidth to suit your needs.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{DE75D012-7A65-11D2-8CEA-00A0C9441E20}">
<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical 1:2" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.33" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical 2:1" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.66" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical 1:2 (white bar)" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="0xFFFFFF" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.33" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical 2:1 (white bar)" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="0xFFFFFF" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.66" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Move Left for 3 way split" iconid="33">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="left" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.44" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Move Right for 3 way split" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="right" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.44" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>

There were 4 transitions and 2 effects in that file... Look where it shows the name above and see which is which...

You have to do it in several passes. Combine clips 1 and 2 with a 1:2 split. Use the shift left to get the first clip centered. Now save as a movie.

Reimport then combine this with clip 3 with a 2:1 split. Use the right shift to get it centered better to 1/3 of the screen.

i dont understand >.>
this is the first time iv done this
so i made the file, called it 3waysplit.xml, saved it under said location, and restarted movie maker.
but where do i find the effect or transition?
i do see the transition "split vertical" but its just the video cut in the centre and opened outward.
where is the place where i can use it for 3 video clips?

In the "File Type' bar it should say 'All types'. I f you don't set it that way it'll be named .xml.txt which won't work

avalonprincess - do you happen to have Vista? If you do, are you using version 2.6 of Movie Maker? FYI, the xml code in this thread is for versions 2.6 and below of Movie Maker.

If the link isn't working, post back with which one you're referring to.

You can download Rehan's split tansitions for Vista here; they require his ShaderTFX plug-in.

Do you guys have a 3-way split .xml for the 6.o version of Movie Maker, perhaps?

First you'll need ShaderTFX installed. An unregistered/expired version is still okay.

Next, install Patrick's Ghost Rect transitions
view post 222302

Copy/paste the following code into Notepad and save it on your Desktop as SplitThirds.xml. After it is saved, move it to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX

You'll have a pair of transitions called 'Split one-third' and 'Split two-thirds'. You'll need to do this in two or three passes. This works best if A is slightly shorter than B, and B is slightly shorter than C.

1. Put clips A and B on the timeline with the 'Split one-third' between. Overlap the clips as much as possible. Save this as a movie (e.g. 'AB.wmv')
2. Put the AB clip, followed by the C clip on the timeline. Put the 'Split two-thirds' between and Overlap the clips as much as possible. Save this as a movie (e.g. 'ABC.wmv')
3. Put the ABC clip on the timeline and trim off any extraneous parts at the beginning or end where they aren't overlapped. Save this as your final movie.

Alrighty - I am going NUTTTTTTTS. I cannot for the life of me find my file in the locations you all have listed here. I did a search and listed the path to which it listed (which was under users/myname/etc --- but when I tried to save it that way - Moviemaker isn't actually listed there either!!! I hope I explained myself well enough here but I can't find where to save it -
I cannot find it under Program Files nor under where it appeared to be listed when I searched my files.

AHHHH!!
