Get a utility that will convert animated GIFs to AVI, then you can import and work with it easily.

You should be able to import animated .gif files directly into MovieMaker and they should play. If you want to have them repeat just drag them down to the storyboard/timeline as many times as you wish.

oh, ok i see now. when you click on 'Import video' go to the folder where ur animated gif file is. where it says 'Files of Type' at the bottom, click on the drop down menu and select 'Picture Files'. then your gif file should appear and then click on it and it'll import.

thanks dean!

It is not documented, but you can simply import animated gifs as "Import pictures" and they sail into the collections. After dragging your animated gif import down to the timeline, select it and drag the right end as far right as you wish. It will play seamlessly. Note, you may have to use the "+" toggle to stretch the timeline out far enough for there to be a place to start your drag.

I find this alternate technique saves a bunch of extra mouse clicks. More people should try this. I'm getting some fine titles with animated gifs to lead into movies.

Rex Harrill

Most animated GIFs are small in size (say less than 100 pixels in either dimension). Your movie is probably going to end up at 640x480 for use on a TV... then obviously everything will get enlarged and look blocky and pixelated.

Two choices:
1) Find animated GIFs that are really big scale and at the right aspect ratio (e.g. 640x480). Note: you aren't likely to find many.
2) Use a GIF editor to place a border around the image so doesn't take up the whole screen. It will be smaller, but appear clearer that way.

Neither choice is very satisfactory, I know, so maybe GIFs aren't what you want to be using anyway.

a third choice is to use a custom profile to make the saved movie the same size as the animated GIF

I am having fits with this as well. At one time, I was able to load a few gifs in, and they played perfectly. Now, those will not play, and most of the ones I try to load are 24 hours long. They will not play at that size, or smaller (I did figure out how to shorten easily. I have no idea why they will not play now. Is this something that can be fixed? Please help!

LadyGreenEyes - welcome to the forums. What's changed on your system (new software, program updates, new hardware, etc) between now and when they worked normally? Try going to "Tools > Options > Compatibility" and unchecking the filters ending in .ax and see if that helps. If that doesn't help and you have one you don't mind sharing with me, upload it to a site such as Rapidshare and I'll download it and check it out on my system.

Nothing has changed other than the standard updates to the antivirus, and that should not matter. Will try the compatibility thing. If no luck, might try the sharing, though even ones that worked and are not too long aren't playing now....Windows makes me crazy...

Another option would be to convert them to a wmv file.

If you decide to share one of them, please upload it to MediaFire as I just ran into a problem when trying to download a file from RapidShare.

I would convert them, but I don't have a converter that will do gifs. In the next day or so, should know if the other solution works.

I don't personally know of any free converters that would do that; but, there are a number of shareware/commercial programs that can. Here's one you might want to try as it offers a free trial allowing you to check it out before buying.

Another option would be to play the animated gif and then use a screen recording program to capture it as a video file. CamStudio is a free one you could try.

Another option would be to extract the images from the animated gif and then import these images into Movie Maker to create a movie.
