Re: New transition set number 5 Posted: 27 Oct 2006 02:18 AM |
Nice work Al.
I thought it would look better if your sets used icons/thumbnails.
I made some icons, put them in a DLL and modified the XML.
See BFXTransitionsset5.zip
How to make icons/thumbnails for WMM effects/transitions using free tools
Irfanview
reshacker
1. Create a new folder
2. Preview each transition in WMM, pause it midway and save the image in the new folder
(Alternatively for gradient wipes such as these we could just use the greyscale gradient files)
3. Irfanview - Image - Create Panorama Image - select all the images in the new folder and stitch them together horizontally.
4. Irfanview - Image - Resize/Resample
Height = 72 pixels
Preserve aspect ratio = ticked
5. Add the 6-pixel top and bottom border
Irfanview - Image - Canvas size
Top, Bottom = 6
Left, Right = 0
Border colour = white
6. Irfanview - File - Save as icons.bmp in your new folder
7. Copy an existing DLL with WMM icons to BFXTransitionsset5.dll (same name as your XML) and open with Reshacker
8. Reshacker - Action - replace bitmap... - Open file with new bitmap - icons.bmp - Replace
9. Reshacker - File - Save
10. Edit your XML
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="2706" SpecialIconResourceID="101">
10a.Add a SpecialIconFileID attribute to the TransitionsAndEffects XML tag and assign it a unique integer from 1 to 8192. The value of this number is not important as long as no other XML effect file uses this number to identify itself.
The problem is that there could be conflicts if many people start doing this.
To get the unique numbers, let's assume that there's only one such post per day and use the date to generate the number.
I propose ddmy where
dd = day of the month
m = last digit of the month
y = last digit of the year
For November and December to avoid conflicts with January and February, let's add 40 to the day.
e.g.
25 October 2006 -> 2506
25 November 2006 -> 6516
25 December 2006 -> 6526
01 February 2007 -> 0127
10b. Add a SpecialIconResourceID attribute to the TransitionsAndEffects tag, and assign it the number assigned to the bitmap folder as you see it in Rehacker, usually 101.
10c. In each transition or effect XML block, add an iconid attribute to the Transition tag, and choose the offset into your bitmap, starting at zero, where your icon is located. These numbers do not have to be sequential, and regions may be skipped.
Al
For your other sets you could just put all the icons in one DLL which would help avoid conflicting SpecialIconFileID.

Hi Glow. I know your added icons will be appreciated.
I'm pretty well versed in creating custom icons thanks to the excellent method / guide you published quite a while back It's well worth bringing to peoples attention again though. I like your method for selecting the special ID number but I guess it depends on how many people want to play ball with this naming routine.
To encourage that and as a complement to your idea It would perhaps be useful to create some form of SpecialIconFileID attribute registry to keep track of all the known codes "Out there" . I could only see that working however if it was made a stickie along the same lines as fishy comics effects in alphabetical order. Unless it assumes a prominent position, I really don't know if it would work.
I've been very cautious up to now of using custom icons in case there is a clash with some of the commercial products out there. Last thing I want is an ear bashing off an irate pixelan punter whose icons have been taken over by mine.
That said however I think it's time I bit the bullet and just did it. I could always publish a warning and disclaimer I suppose. Perhaps what I will do is create a dummy effect just for the purpose of providing custom icons for several xmls (which is not far off what you have suggested) . If people want the icons they have to download the dummy effect. It would be easy to control having just one unique icon file.

Dickmr - The steps transition is my favourite too - I was really surprised when it came out looking like that as the source mask was really just the result of a single mouse click .

Nice work with the border color. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite since they are all good. However The Fog transition will get the most attention for now since I see use for it in a up coming project.
Also thanks Glow for adding the icons. I was considering making a set for my own use since I feel these teansitions has found a home in my Movie Maker for a long time. |

Thanks Mallett - I've just started going over all my old transitions and adding icons right now.
Thinking out loud I guess that icon creation could be made a little simpler by creating a custom save profile to get the 96*84 ratio correct and introducing an overlay or somthing to get the white borders ?...
Glow - if you need suggestions for your next greasemonkey update - how about "How to create custom icons"

overlays for titles and effects would be a good idea - I'll try and get round to it - The new greasemonkey script works fine

Re: New transition set number 5 Posted: 31 Oct 2006 09:59 AM |
I've updated all my transition sets (one thru to five) to include icons that appear in the transitions menu of MM2 . If anybody has these transitions previously installed , you'll be prompted to write over these old files when opening the self extracting zip file - allow them to overwrite if you wish for the update.
I haven't got round to any other icons yet for the other effects, but they will be in the pipeline.
Soon as I get a chance I'll try and post some form of change log on my site to reflect the changes.

Re: New transition set number 5 Posted: 01 Nov 2006 02:48 AM |
I see all the DLLs are the same with the same bitmap and same specialIconFileId
That seems to work OK with no conflict as it obviously it makes no difference which dll is selected by MM2. I was going to create a dummy xml just for the purposes of creating the icons for all the other effects, but after some thought I did a 180 as I figured it would cause confusion having to download for than one xml. I'm still using only one specialiconfield though so nothings wasted
I think I will do a generic dll with some bongos on it or somthing for other effects that don't really require a fully customised icon.

SpecialIconFileID just has to be a unique integer from 1 to 8192. The value of this number is not important as long as no other XML effect file uses this number to identify itself.
The problem is that there could be conflicts if many people start doing this.
I suggested using a form of the date to get a more-or-less unique number.
So for today 7 May 2007, I'd use 0757.

It would be handy me thinks to perhaps keep a list of known numbers that have been used and pin it somewhere on the forum.

Re: New transition set number 5 Posted: 07 May 2007 05:08 PM |
Or even better if there was a master database that someone could create and dynamically query to show the assigned numbers. But in the meantime, a pinned post would be useful. We can't forget people like Pixelan and Adorage too. I notice that Pixelan uses numbers in the 1-100 range. Rehan is using things in the 1000+ range. Has anyone got a "starter" list of numbers already used?
Maybe we can start a list here and then migrate it to a pinned post later.

When I get a chance I'll give it a go... but first things first.
If anyone would like to help gather SpecialIconFileIDs, I've created a little IconList batch file that will gather a list of your .dlls and .xmls listing the values of SpecialIconFileIDs. It creates an 'iconlist.txt' file in your AddOnTFX folder.
If you can, run this on your PC and post any numbers that you find that we haven't already gathered... |

332, Mallett Swipes.dll, (Forum member Mallets Transition set)
5374 BFX_MONTAGE3x3transitions.dll, www.hitthebongo.co.uk
Brilliant work Blaine ! This will save me and others a lot of headaches by having a reference source and reducing the chances of conflict. It definitely needs to be pinned somewhere.
