Crop for WMM 6 Posted: 16 Jul 2007 04:06 PM |
Hi everybody out there,
I have a Sony DV Camera which reads my old analog 8mm tapes. The problem is that the clips I got on my computer come with some noise in the bottom, so I need a filter which would crop 8 pixels from the bottom and I would get rid of the noise. Does anyone know of a free downloadable filter for WMM 6?

welcome to the forum...
Use Vdub to crop the video before bringing it into MM...don't know if there is a filter for that or not... |

Crop is not that difficult. All you need is a fixed zoom to appropriate value such as 5% or 10%. For example:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="2057" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="TFX">
<Effect name="RehanFX: Crop Left 10%" iconid="2" guid="RehanFX: Crop Left 10%" ShaderModel="2">
<Param name="Animation" value="FXPanZoom" />
<Param name="FXFile" value="Parity.fx" />
<Param name="Technique" value="PanZoom" />
<Semantics>
<TextureViewport type="float4" value="0.1,0.05,0.9,0.9"/>
</Semantics>
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>
This crop effect preserves the aspect ratio while zooming in to the 90% rectangle on right, leaving 10% area on left.
Download this package for 15 readymade crop effects (3 on each side and 3 on center)

Rehan, how can I just slice 40 px off each side of the frame on the source? The clips I downloaded from the camera aer 720 x 480, but the final size should be 640 x 480 (4:3).
How can I accomplish this?

| The frame size 720x480 is the standard size for NTSC DV AVI capture. However it is still supposed to be 4:3. This is because the pixels are not square. When you play this video what is the frame size you get in the player? |

I get that frame size, but when I encode it with Flash (I use a hosting service), the image size is 400 x 300, but there are bars on top and bottom and the images is not proprortional--it's squashed.
The workaround I've been using has been to Publish at "VHS" or "Portble Media" settings. That gives me 640 x 480 and seems to work okay.
I didn't know that the pixel shape was different--I was wondering about the apparent conflict in aspect ratio.
Is there any "hidden" setting in WMM to get the 640x480 but at a higherquality?
Thanks!

| There's just a lil problem when I installed your pack. When I went to check these effects in demo, nothing cropped! IIRC, after I installed this, it asked if I either needed to install using recommended settings, or if it was installed correctly. I chose the latter. Is that why? |

| I used the crop 10% to the left and it works great! But is there a code to crop a video 10% up?? I could really use that. Thanks |
