I have a question =] please help!
Posted: 01 Aug 2007 07:20 PM
Ok this has probably been asked a million times but I just cant find a reply that relates to my type of question. I'm kind of new to movie maker and I am planning on making a film in my spare time, and since it's just a hobby, I can't afford to spend lots on a professional camera. The camcorder I do have takes a good picture, but I would like to know if there is a way to get the almost glowy effect that I see in movies all the time. I have found effects that make the colors look a bit warmer, but nothing that gives off the radiance of the picture quality you see in million dollar movies. If anyone knows of a good script I can use to add on to movie maker, it would be areciated lots if you would share it with me!

Yes, that might help too. Post a before and after, if possible. You can put them somewhere like imageshack.us and post the links here.

So yeah....i tried applying the blur effect and a color correction effect, and it would have come really close, but the blur was a bit too much and you couldnt see the picture clearly. maybe if no one knows of the original effect i was looking for, does anyone know an effect that will allow me to blur the picture just slightly?

Can you give me the steps you did in your image editing program? Perhaps a pair of effects (blur and color change) like you said would work, but just with different parameters.

To get you started, here are some custom blur effects. First, navigate to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared and make an AddOnTFX folder (if it doesn't exist already).

Next copy/paste the following code into Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and save it in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX as blurry.xml

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{7312498D-E87A-11D1-81E0-0000F87557DB}" comment="Blur">
<Effect name="Blur, 1.0 radius" iconid="30" comment="Blur">
<Param name="PixelRadius" value="1.0" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Blur, 1.5 radius" iconid="30" comment="Blur">
<Param name="PixelRadius" value="1.5" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Blur, 3.0 radius" iconid="30" comment="Blur">
<Param name="PixelRadius" value="3.0" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Blur, 4.0 radius" iconid="30" comment="Blur">
<Param name="PixelRadius" value="4.0" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Blur, 5.0 radius" iconid="30" comment="Blur">
<Param name="PixelRadius" value="5.0" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Blur, 9.0 radius" iconid="30" comment="Blur">
<Param name="PixelRadius" value="9.0" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

When you restart Movie Maker (close it and open it), you'll have several new Blur effects. Note: you can make your own by copying the 3 lines from <Effect> and </Effect> and changing the parameter. Valid values are up to 25.0

Yeah actually that came really similar, considering the video is used to test out the effects on was taken with a digital camera of extremely bad quality.But if it would help me get closer to my desired look, here are the steps i used to get the glowy look in the picture i used as an example before:
1. i duplicated the original image as another layer
2. on the top layer i applied a 5% gaussian blur
3. i set the top layer onto "overlay"

I tried to overlay a duplicated video with the blur and the color correction filters, but it didnt work. =/

Ah, I forget what processing is involved in the overlay function... I'm going to have to do some research. It's not a simple blend and it may not be easy to do with standard WMM effects like color correction.

Here's what I found on Overlay mode:
Overlay mode inverts the pixel value of the lower layer, multiplies it by two times the pixel value of the upper layer, adds that to the original pixel value of the lower layer, divides by 255, and then multiplies by the pixel value of the original lower layer and divides by 255 again. It darkens the image, but not as much as with “Multiply” mode.

Hmm...
