Image watermark

Is there a way to import a transparent GIF image, then watermark it over the entire movie? Thanks in advance.

Update 12 September 2010 by glow
The original code discussed here back in 2005 was for the WMM 2.x in Windows XP.
Since then WMM 6.0 for Windows Vista has come out and the syntax is different.
If you have WMM 6.0 in Vista or Windows 7 and you want to overlay a logo, please refer to
Overlaying a logo/watermark in Windows Vista

I should also point out that having used overlays for 5 years now, I find that rather than trying to position a logo with the "LogoRect" parameter, I generally find it easier to position the logo using my favourite graphics program and make a full screen transparent overlay.

Note (10/9/2005): XML in this post was edited to take out an unnecessary EffectID parameter and to reference the logo in the AddOnTFX directory, since this has caused some confusion for others copying the code. The original code looked like this:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="{353359C1-39E1-491b-9951-464FD8AB071C}">
<Title name="@My Logo" iconid="13"
EffectID="{A6E2C753-30EB-4e3e-B207-82039ED066F4}" comment="http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=12624">
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleMultiTitles"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Puts mylogo.gif in bottom right corner"/>
<Param name="LogoBitmapFilename" value="
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\mylogo.gif"/>
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.8 0.8 0.2 0.2"/>
etc....

Hi TD11
Welcome to the forum and thanks for an interesting question.

If you search this forum for "watermark", you'll see several suggestions like
a) Use a text title (if your watermark is in a font or can be made into a font)
b) Chromakeyed transitions
c) VirtualDub logo filter
d) Windows Media Encoder

I can add my own suggestion since I've recently discovered how to customise titles with XML.
Here I use a modified version of the newspaper title to place a bitmap in the bottom right hand corner.

1. Copy your logo say mylogo.gif into C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\mylogo.gif
(For best results the logo should have a transparent background)
2. Copy this XML code into C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\mylogo.xml

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="{353359C1-39E1-491b-9951-464FD8AB071C}">
<Title name="@My Logo" iconid="13" comment="http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=12624">
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleMultiTitles"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Puts mylogo.gif in bottom right corner"/>
<Param name="LogoBitmapFilename" value="AddOnTFX\mylogo.gif"/>
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.8 0.8 0.2 0.2"/>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.1 0.075 0.8 0.15"/>
<Param name="MaxCharacterCount" value="32"/>
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.1 0.25 0.8 0.1"/>
<Param name="MaxCharacterCount" value="32"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>
</TitleDLL>
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

3. Close and Restart Movie Maker
4. Add a title to the title overlay track of your project timeline using your customised MyLogo title - just put a space as the text.
5. Extend the title over the length of your movie.

You can adjust the position of the logo by modifying the LogoRect
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.8 0.8 0.2 0.2"/>
Here 0.8 0.8 is the X,Y relative coordinates of the top left of the logo where 0 0 is the top left and 1 1 is the bottom right.
0.2 0.2 is the length in the X and Y direction.

One problem with this is that the logo is opaque - I'm not sure how to make it transparent.

If you had a watermark in a font then you could alter the transparency of the text using the Transparency slider in the title font and size window.

Thanks for the reply. I will definately give it a go. I made a transparent image in Paint Shop Pro 9, seemed to do the trick. Thanks again.

Yes the transparency should work fine for Logo bitmaps.

I've been wondering the same issue since... I don't know.. a long time ago, and I've yet to grab the concept of it. The same thing, I too just want to add a teenie-weenie image logo on my whole video.

I've understood your step from 1 to 3. But when it comes to Step 4, I'm lost. How do I actually add a title using that customised 'MyLogo' title.

What am I supposed to be clicking? Will the 'MyLogo' option be under the 'Choose the Title Animation' choice list or what? If that's so, how come I can't find it? I tried restarting my WMM so many times, but I still can't see any change to what that xml file did to my option list.

Though on 2nd thought, does this got to do with the version of Movie Maker I'm using? Since I'm using version 2.0...?

Welcome boogie.

I'm also using MM 2.0.
Sorry, there's a typo in my post - the correct location for the XML is
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\Mylogo.xml
If the directory doesn't exist, just create it.
The logo itself goes in the parent directory C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\

Since I wrote that example, Rehan has pointed out that the EffectID is actually optional so to avoid confusing MM, you can delete it.

Golfman, mylogo.gif is the file which contians your logo. You have to make it in some image/graphics program such as Paint or PainShopPro or PhotoShop

More detailed information is available about this here.

Welcome to the forum snufkin

Step 4
a. Rewind the timeline to the beginning (Control-Q)
b. Menu Tools - Titles and Credits - Add title on the selected clip
c. Just type in a single space as your text
d. Click on "change the title animation"
e. Select "My Logo"
f. Click on "Done, add title to movie"

Step 5
g. Move the mouse to your title in the "Title Overlay" track
h. Click and drag the right hand edge of the title to the desired length.

The location of the logo is specified by
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.8 0.8 0.2 0.2"/>
Try
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.4 0.4 0.2 0.2"/>

ua,

if you meant how to resize the rectangle containing the logo image in the title, then obviosuly it can be done by therectangle parameters:

<Param name="LogoRect" value="x y width height"/>

where all parameters are expressed in fractions of output width and height i.e. 0.0 to 1.0

Hi coffeebean, if you use the example logo title code, the text already appears next to the logo image. All you have to do is type it in the normal way. or perhaps I dont understand your question. Please elaborate.

See the bottom of the article, that logo is right at the bottom right. To make it bigger change the LogoRect line as one of the following:

<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.7 0.7 0.3 0.3"/>
or
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.6 0.6 0.4 0.4"/>
or
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5"/>

The last one will contain the logo on the entire bottom right quarter.
