Overlay Effect Question?
Posted: 23 Feb 2005 09:32 PM
Howdy,

I was wondering if someone could give me suggestions about this.

I'm looking for an overlay that is similar in effect to the Newspaper. I'm working on doing a News Network type video for a game and would like to have an actual video clip instead of a news paper appear, then have a box in the upper right corner display a little bit of the video of a person sitting at a desk, with the black area in the upper right corner then transition into that video. Is this too complicated especially since we're doing a film clip instead of a static image like the news paper.

Thanks,
Dd.

Hi, my first thought is that this can be done, but
I am have a litte trouble visualizing what you are
asking for. Video of a guy at a news desk,
video in a small window appears over his shoulder,
he starts talking about the action in the video, and
the video zooms in?
That would not be a problem. If my description
is wrong....need more detail.

Yea that is exactly what I mean.

I found this. Movie in Movie thing.

But it shows up in the center and is a transition. I need it more of an overlay type of thing. So that I could have person at the news desk talking about it, then put in the transition to start the movie which is in the little box in the window.

Worst comes to worst, a Reverse Newspaper thing would be good with the video playing, and the overlay (upper right hand box) is a static image that I've imported.

<Param name="FadeStartA" value="1.0" />

Let me try making it...
but it would be using PIP+.

There are 3 ways I see doing it...
#1- A controlled transition. Say 95%
of the time the window is in the upper
corner, and the zoom happens right
at the end of the transition.
#2 -Use A transitions that puts the window
in the upper corner. Make that movie. Import
that movie. Then use another transition
that starts the movie in the corner so it
sits right on top of where is was in your
first movie, and then zooms in. It
could be made failrly seamless. Requires
2 steps.
#3) - An effect that puts the movie
in the upper corner, over a blue screen
background and the zooms in at the end.
Split your clip where you want it to be fullscreen,
and apply the effect to the first clip. It will zoom in
and continue playing at the split, seamlessly.
Then make that movie, import it and use the blue
chroma key to overlay it with your newsman.
Requires 2 steps

Let me try using the first method.

Ok...Here ya go. Just a bit more than 1/2 an hour
to think of the transition, make the transition,
draw a picture(that looks like a 2 year old
drew it), add a little fancy static to the
start of the video clip, and make the movie.
Now the question is...will it please the client?
Of course....you get what you pay for.

news desk

The video in the corner can play as long as you want,
you just overlay the 2nd clip longer. If you overlay for a very
long time...the zoom will slow down, so you could shorten
the zoom time in the transition. The border in the picture
is also not part of the transition. I added that as an effect.
Here is the PIP+ transition.(XML code)

<Transition name="PIP+ news" iconid="0">
<Param name="RectA" value=" 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.00, 1.00, 0.0;
1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.00, 1.00, 0.0;"
/>

<Param name="RectB" value=" 0.0, 0.700, 0.05, 0.250, 0.250, 1.0;
0.90, 0.700, 0.05, 0.250, 0.250, 1.0;
1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0;"
/>

</Transition>

This looks pretty cool although the link you provided doesn't work, I assume that is the image you created. I am going to fiddle with it right now and let you know how it works.

Thanks,
Dd.

Yes, that link is dead right now...I am logged in to
work, so my Sharegear server is not running.
It will be running again later this afternoon.

I also made a few assumptions...
A) That you know what PIP+ is
B) That you know where and how to
update the PIP+ XML file.

If you don't have Rehan's PIP+ demo,
check out his website..www.rehanfx.com
Once you have it or if you already have it,
add that code I gave you into:
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\pipplus.xml
put it after a </Transition> statement, which ends the
previous transition definition.
That should do it.

Wow, I finally got back to this today, and I got it to work.

I don't think I ever did finish the project I had originally intended to use it for.

Although I have a new project which I'd like to use this for however I need it more of a Title Overlay effect rather than a short transition. Is there a way to make it do that?

I don't expect an answer as this is an older post but I figured I would reply just to say thanks and I got it working.

My new one I'd need sort of like this, but with the boarder slightly animated (is that even possible?)

Thanks Again,

Hi. I'm not following exactly, but are you trying to overlay a video that would go inside a screen such as in this image below? Or something similar where the image would be a tv in the upper right and the remainder of the frame is blue or black for bluescreening/ etc. It can be done, but the 'animation' part would have to be done first, and then a PIP transition would be used to position that video and then you use an image such as this for a title overlay over the top of the video.
