recreating the Matrix punching effect
Posted: 29 Apr 2007 08:12 PM
I just found this web site called izzyvideo.com and the guy
has a lot of interesting videos with tips for amateur movie makers.
He has this one video describing "an interesting effect", which turns
out to be something that give you something like the scene in the Matrix
where Neo punches very fast. This guy uses Final Cut Pro, so he
has a bit of an advantage, but this can be done in MM2.
You need PIP+, but the free version should work.

You can go watch his video or just follow my directions here.
Sorry, I am not as polished as Izzy(he's pretty good)

Film someone punching.
Import that clip into MM2.
Add it to the timeline twice
Transition with the PIP+ transition at the end of this post.
Overlay the 2nd clip so that it starts maybe 2-5 frames
later than the 1st clip. Try different placements. Izzy
suggests 5 frames, but I don't know if Final Cut works
with every frame...MM2 only works with every 2nd frame.

So see what you get, and let me know if anyone has success.
I tried it and my results were only so-so, but I tried something
quick with video from my digital camera. Not a fair test.

Here is the PIP+ transition.

I don't think I posted this specific transition, nor have I tried to do
this trick. But I'm an old guy, I may have forgotten. I know I posted
a ghosting idea view post 51663 but that was a different concept,
and used a PIP+ effect...not a transition. I would have thought this
works with the free version. Can you tell me what happened when
you tried it?

Ok..I found an old post where Rehan clarified that changes to the
alpha channel will not work with the free version. So sadly, this
trick wouldn't work will not work unless you register PIP+.

Editorial:
8 bucks?...Doesn't a movie and popcorn cost more than $8 these days?
Of course, I have been tempted to buy some of the "Slick" effects from Geethree,
but they want $70 bucks each for some of the better packs. Too rich for my
blood. Everyone has their price point.
