| Check www.papajohn.org > Problem Solving. Look under 'Crashes & Hangs' and 'Can't Save Movie'. Some of the same issues for XP (such as incompatible source files) apply to Vista as well. |

Hi everyone, I posted on another thread yesterday about the same issue, but as I was looking around today I noticed that there are about 6 threads in the past 2 weeks on this exact issue. What is most interesting is that the number of hits on these threads are huge (one thread has 1900+ hits), more than anything else on this board.
This leads me to believe that this is a very common problem - and it seems to be different from the XP issues related to codecs and hardware acceleration. I've tried the fixes on papajohn's website (and several other things - like uninstalling every non-microsoft program from the computer one-by-one, trying to publish single jpg images, etc.). So far nothing has worked at all.
Just to be very specific about the problem, everything works perfectly fine in editing, etc., no crashes, hangs, or any issues at all until I try to publish. I can save the project fine, open it, preview it, etc. As soon as I try to publish and give it a name for the movie, the screen turns white and I get the non-descript, "Windows Movie Maker has experienced a problem" error. Then, it restarts the program and all work since start-up is gone. For me, this is happening on Vista Home Premium, but I've seen other posters having the same issue on Ultimate.
If anyone has found a solution to this, please post it. Also, I haven't seen any posts indicating that any of the solutions on papajohn's crashes & hangs page are relevant. If anyone HAS had success fixing this publishing problem on vista using something from there, please post that also, because that would provide some evidence that it is a related issue and not something completely different.
Thank you all, this is a great board. |

| If I encounter problems with publishing and can figure out something about the cause, I will certainly post, but so far I'm publishing without problem. Because the Vista version of Movie Maker is new on the market we don't have the repository of experience on it like we do with XP. We'll just have to hope that more people that might be having problems are able to post their details and their diagnostic steps to give the community more information to solve this. |

I brought a good news for all of you who met the same problem as me.
I happened to find the resolution for this problem. This problem will also make Outlook2007 and OneNote2007 crash. I got the resolution for these 2 applications and found it also resolve the Movie Maker publishing problem in Vista.
The problem is because of Voxware Audio Codec. Please follow the steps below. :)
-Enter regedit.exe with Adim permission
-Expend HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Driver32
-Right click msacm.voxacm160 and rename it to no.msacm.voxacm16
-Your Movie Maker will be happy to work for publishing immediantly. :) |

The culprit for me was Nero Essentials 7 (Vista version). I had to uninstall it and was able to get it working. None of the other fixes mentioned in this thread worked, and that entry in the registry did not exist for me.
First I turned off the filters, then I uninstalled my Divx pack, then Nero. With a reboot in between each to see what worked.
Now I'm gonna try loading just the basic Nero burn program and NOT the whole sofware suite. See if I can still use it to burn discs. Any alternatives to Nero that people like?

I think you can disable all external filter in options first. And if it still doesn't work when publishing, try my resolution.
Before I resolved it, my movie maker crashed with a ntdll.dll error.
p.s. How to enter regedit,
press [windows key + R], and then type regedit.exe in the poput RUN box |

thanks remyc....
I added a comment about the Voxware audio codec(s) to my Problem Solving > Crashes and Hangs page.
I'm guessing that finding the codec file and renaming it would have the same effect as doing the registry renaming... and avoid having to muck around in the registry. It's a step to take the codec out of the picture. |

I myself am having the same problem which is why I came here (hehe). I tried remyc's solution, but that didn't work, as my publishing screen still goes white after it gets to the "Estimating time remaining" section, then it simply says "Windows Movie Maker is restarting".
I uninstalled Nero Version 7, so I thought that would have fixed it...anybody know what I can do to solve this issue? |

Okay I am also still having the problems. I tried everything on Papajohn's site. I never had nero or voxware on this system. So that is not my issue.
What I get when it crashes, varies:
A. It just goes white then automatically restarts Movie Maker then reloads the project file I use without telling me there is an error.
B. Goes to white and comes back saying Movie Maker crashed and is now restarting.
Those two are the main ones I get and the only ones I remember at this moment. I am in the process of uninstalling Roxio, seeing if it creates the same problem that Nero does. If it works out I will let you all know. |
For the solution to make DivX codec workable and still be able to publish refer to my post:

Re: Movie Maker cant publish the movie Posted: 26 Sep 2007 11:23 AM |
I was getting an "Unspecified Error" each time I tried to publish. After editing, saving, and attempting to publish to DVD, Movie Maker would open DVD Maker, which would then announce "0 of 1 files were sucessfully added" and "Unspecified Error".
I then published the DVD to the computer (in NTSC format), then opened DVD Maker, clicked "Add Files", then added the single file that resulted from publishing to the computer. hope this works for others. |

for those who have vista( note that this soulution didnt work for me but it might for you) search for event viewer in your start menu, open it. expand windows logs. select application, find when movie maker shut down and double click it.
this is what it says on mine:
Faulting application MOVIEMK.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b5b6, faulting module iac25_32.ax, version 2.0.5.53, time stamp 0x3847010a, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00003548, process id 0x14b8, application start time 0x01c808c81e5a23ad.
some where in there, there is something called a faulting module and something next to it, mine is iac25_32.ax, now search for that and rename it. then restart movie maker and it should work, |
The badaboom is final |

thanks DozeBeatsS... and welcome to the forum
With you seconding it, I added it to my list of codecs that Movie Maker can have issues with. I also see that earlier this year it was reported to have been involved in DVD Maker crashing in Vista. |

| Actually, renaming it did not fix the problem entirely.WMM did in fact publish the movie for me but there was no video. It turns out I needed to upgrade my codecs.I installed the Vista Codec Pack and that solved my problem. |

I tried remyc's solution for my publishing problems, and my Windows Movie Maker now publishes to my computer for the first time since I bought the computer 7 months ago! The problem had stumped both me and HP customer support. I am extremely grateful to remyc, and also to forums like this. Amazing how, with all the "big brains" that make all these programs, it's often the users who figure out how to fix them. Thanks again, remyc!

Re: Movie Maker cant publish the movie Posted: 25 Dec 2007 03:04 PM |
I rarely register and post on message boards but I have made an exception here. After surfing the web for almost four days I finally found your forum and the solution to my Movie Maker crashing. I am forever grateful.
I had no problems with XP but just got this Vista PC and found out there was a problem. I installed some codecs since I wasn't able to view avi files on WMP 11. I specifically installed a voxware codec since I read that it would handle that. Turns out I wasn't satisfied with it and uninstalled it, or so I thought. I recently installed ffdshow codec and all seems to be good.
I will have to move my reg cleaner from my old PC and clean out my registry. This has been one of the only major problems I have had with Vista. My first one was getting connected to the web. The setting was turned off for some reason, I had to call my ISP for that.
Thanks again for the help. |
