Acronym splits title
Posted: 19 Oct 2006 03:14 AM
Hey all, first post on the forums, but I've been enjoying them for months now. I'm working on a project right now where I'd like a custom title, and couldn't find anything like it.

Basically, I'm hoping to have 3 letters appear on the screen, then they split apart to the sides to show that they are actually acronyms. In the case of my video, I'd like "SAW" to appear on screen, then the letters move left and right until they can from the words "Spy Another Way." Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

here's a link showing kind of what i want. I'd like to have the space in between the two sets of titles show the first one split to make the second one, If that's any help.

The best I can suggest would be to create this as an animated title in PowerPoint. Create three text boxes with SAW, then add motion for each to happen simultaneously. Then have the rest of the words appear between. You could use 'Windows Media Encoder series 9, to turn that into a video.

If you did it on a blue background, you could use 'Chroma Blue'. If on a black background, perhaps 'Comp A add B'.

G'day ThreeChamigosStudios

I thought this was an interesting request so I had a crack at it...

Here's a sample movie using the XML below.

Some explanation of each title:
"Acronym Split SAW"
A custom title is able to animate each paragraph.
I used a custom credit which has three paragraphs - the header, actor and character.
Normally the header appears separately from the first actor but if we set
<Param name="CreditLineOverlap" value="1.0" />
All credit lines appear at the same time.
We can put a single letter in each paragraph and independently set the Entrance, Main and Exit Positions (note that these seem to refer to the position of the centre of the text window unlike other location parameters which normally specify the top left corner).

For this title "Acronym Split SAW" I used the coordinates based on your original example clip.
It's a little fiddly calculating the coordinates - I found Al's test grid a useful tool for helping to visually estimate the coordinates.
For your example I only needed two positions for each paragraph so I used EntrancePosition and MainPosition.

"Acronym Split 1a" and "Acronym Split 1b"
It's not a very general solution to have to calculate the positions of the three letters for each instance of your title. If anything changes like the text or the font or font size you'd have to recalculate. So in "Acronym Split 1a" we still put a single letter in each paragraph but this time we fix the Exit Position to support a general three letter acronym.
Then in "Acronym Split 1b" we put a whole word in each paragraph starting at the same place as the exit of "Acronym Split 1a"
The problem here is that the word spacing is no longer automatic and it can look bad if the words become too long or short.

"Acronym Split 2a" and "Acronym Split 2b"
To avoid the problem of the horizontal spacing of words for a more general title, it's easier if the words are arranged vertically, left justified.
"Acronym Split 2a" contains the initials
"Acronym Split 2b" contains the whole words.

Some other ideas to try
- try adding EffectTypeWriter so the single letter is expanded letter-by-letter
- try EffectRotate to make the letters spin into position?

Yes, I thought this was a very interesting idea too. I got a Powerpoint one to work too, and made the short vid below. I comped the frame and added a few metacreations and shatters to make it last longer... ha ha I'm going to try glow's method though, because its very likely less time consuming and it looks great in his example. Also, if people don't have a capture method or the Powerpoint program it certainly would be their option. I'm glad I tried CG's suggestion though, if only to become more familar with drawing motion paths and stumbling upon other ideas. This is a cool idea, and thanks to TCS for asking about, and CG and Glow for great answers and stirring up the brain cells!

G'day monte033

I assume you mean a 4- or 5-letter acronym.

I don't think you can do this in a single title because you only have 3 paragraphs to play with so you might have to break it up into a couple of titles.

Put the first three letters in one title like 2a but starting further left and ending up higher (and make the same adjustment to 2b).
Then make a second title with letters 4 and 5 (starting further to the right a bit and ending up lower down).
You could then overlap the titles on the time line so they start at the same time.

A quick diagram to help illustrate the point
You have a title to animate the yellow smilies and another title for the red ones.
You set the EntrancePosition for each title like this:
---------------------

SmileyBig SmileScaredMadDevil

---------------------

And the ExitPosition like this:
---------------------
Smiley
Big Smile
Scared
Mad
Devil
---------------------

Are you using the XP or Vista version of WMM? The XML syntax is different for each.
btw if this is your first custom title xml this is quite a complex example - any reason why you chose this one?
You probably didn't see the sample video since it was on my geocities site which died a few months ago. (I have moved them somewhere else, just haven't got around to fixing up the links).

Love these titles BTW.
I'm not great with editing XML's but I'm trying.
I'd like the Acronym Split SAW title to be lower down on the screen, but I don't know how to change it...any chance you could help?

Thanks in advance for any help :)
