Creating Credits
Posted: 09 Jun 2006 01:20 PM
I'm currently trying to add credits to a movie with a large cast (50+ people) and am having troubles working with the format WMM has provided.

I'm trying to create a basic scrolling list of names, like this:

Name
Name
Name
ect.

However, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this. I've tried putting all names in the text boxes to the right, but they'll end up widely spaced when I do that, like so:

Name

Name

--

Obviously, with 50 people it would take forever to get through the credits that way, and it would just look stupid. Is there any way in which I could get the names to form a compacted, scrolling list? Would I have to edit the XML code, or am I just missing something really simple? Seems odd that Microsoft would leave out one of the most common credit formats...

I created a custom version of the Side-by-side scrolling credits where I tightened the spacing. Check out the following post: view post 57114

Almost, but I'm just looking for a single row of names. Probably should have mentioned this in the first post, but the animation I'm trying to work with is Credits: Video Left. I can get the single row just fine, but the verticle spacing is far too high. Here's a diagram of what I'm getting:

-------------------------------------------------------------
| Name
|
Video |
|
|
| Name

And of what I'm looking for:

---------------------------------------------------------
| Name
| Name
| Name
Video | Name
| ect.
|
|

Thanks for the help.

So just names, no roles? Are you then leaving the second item blank?

Your wish is my command. Smiley

Copy/paste this into Notepad, save it in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX as creditsvlnames.xml (or whatever as long as it ends in .xml).

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="{353359C1-39E1-491b-9951-464FD8AB071C}">
<Title name="Credits: Video Left (just names)" iconid="13">
<Param name="InternalName" value="CreditStandard" />
<Param name="Description" value="Credits scroll up on the right (names only)" />
<Param name="CreditLineOverlap" value="0.94" />
<Param name="IsHeaderFullTime" value="true" />
<Param name="MainVideoRect" value="0.0 0.0 0.5 1.0" />
<Param name="OptimalDurationMultiplier" value="2.0" />
<Param name="MaxCharacterCount" value="24" />
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast" />
<Param name="BannerType" value="LeftFlood" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.1 0.1 0.8 0.1" />
<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectFade" />
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade" />
<Param name="ExitDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />
<Param name="ForceCenterAlignment" value="true" />
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="EntrancePosition" value="0.5 1.3" />
<Param name="ExitPosition" value="0.5 -0.3" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.5 0.2 0.4 0.25" />
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Bottom" />
<Param name="FontSize" value="16.0" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="EntrancePosition" value="0.5 1.3" />
<Param name="ExitPosition" value="0.5 -0.3" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.5 0.45 0.4 0.02" />
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Top" />
<Param name="FontSize" value="2.0" />
<Param name="ResizingTechnique" value="KeepVerticalConstant" />
<Param name="Text" value=" " />

</Paragraph>
</Title>
</TitleDLL>
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

When you restart WMM you'll have the new credit called "Credits: Video Left (just names)". If you type something in the second field, it will appear in a really small font. Smiley For reference, I've highlighted the lines that are different from the standard credits.

Wow, you can make effects like that? Thats is nice, maybe you can make a transition that allows you to overlap a clip onto another.

Hi considerate guy I was trying to change your xml, I want the text to simply scroll up without any spaces or limit on the characters, so I need to change the MaxCharacterCount number to a really large number right? and should I delete the IsOneLine parameter or change it to false? plz advise me

<Param name="MaxCharacterCount" value="24" />

<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />

Re: Creating Credits

As I've specified things, the tightness is accomplished by keeping the names to a single line so if you extend the character count or make it mulitple lines, you'll end up with credits overlapping each other.

It sounds like you may just want to find my 'scroll up' title. It is based on the 'Scroll, Perspective' title but is flat. It lets you type an arbitrary amount of text and it just scrolls up the screen... it could work for titles.

I've been lurking around for a while and have learned a lot. Thanks to you generous and dedicated folks. This is my first post so correct me if it is inappropriate in any way.

I modified Blaine's code to work on Vista (Premium), as follows:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="TFX">
<Title name="Credits: Video Left (just names)" iconid="13">
<Param name="Animation" value="CreditStandard" />
<Param name="Description" value="Credits scroll up on the right (names only)" />
<Param name="CreditLineOverlap" value="0.94" />
<Param name="IsHeaderFullTime" value="true" />
<Param name="MainVideoRect" value="0.0 0.0 0.5 1.0" />
<Param name="OptimalDurationMultiplier" value="2.0" />
<Param name="MaxCharacterCount" value="24" />
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast" />
<Param name="BannerType" value="LeftFlood" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.1 0.1 0.8 0.1" />
<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectFade" />
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade" />
<Param name="ExitDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />
<Param name="ForceCenterAlignment" value="true" />
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="EntrancePosition" value="0.5 1.3" />
<Param name="ExitPosition" value="0.5 -0.3" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.5 0.2 0.4 0.25" />
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Bottom" />
<Param name="FontSize" value="16.0" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="EntrancePosition" value="0.5 1.3" />
<Param name="ExitPosition" value="0.5 -0.3" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.5 0.45 0.4 0.02" />
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Top" />
<Param name="FontSize" value="2.0" />
<Param name="ResizingTechnique" value="KeepVerticalConstant" />
<Param name="Text" value=" " />
</Paragraph>
</Title>
</TitleDLL>
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

The title shows up on the list but names entered do not appear. Where did I go wrong?

Since bfanlin's attempt to create an equivalent for Vista does not 100% work, where can I get Vista version for tighter scrolling effect ?

Thanks

There are additional changes (shown in bold) that need to be made to get this to work in Vista. I tested the following code which works. Copy/paste this into Notepad, then save it in your Documents folder as 'CreditsVideoLeftTighter.xml'. Then copy it from there to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX.

When you restart WMM you should have a new animation called 'Credits: Video Left (just names)'. Here's a sample video of Credits: Video Left (just names)':

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="TFX">
<Title name="Credits: Video Left (just names)" guid="Credits: Video Left (just names)" iconid="13" comment="Blaine's Post #136645">
<Param name="Animation" value="CreditStandard" />
<Param name="Description" value="Credits scroll up on the right (names only)" />
<Param name="CreditLineOverlap" value="0.94" />
<Param name="IsHeaderFullTime" value="true" />
<Param name="MainVideoRect" value="0.0 0.0 0.5 1.0" />
<Param name="OptimalDurationMultiplier" value="2.0" />
<Param name="MaxCharacterCount" value="24" />
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast" />
<Param name="BannerType" value="LeftFlood" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.1 0.1 0.8 0.1" />
<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectFade" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="ExitDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />
<Param name="ForceCenterAlignment" value="true" />
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="EntrancePosition" value="0.5 1.3" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="ExitPosition" value="0.5 -0.3" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.5 0.2 0.4 0.25"/>
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Bottom" />
<Param name="FontSize" value="16.0" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="true" />
</Paragraph>

Thanks Blaine. It worked.

In the left space, I'll like to put some words (such as my name, contact phone, etc.) that don't change. How can I achieve that? I imagine putting the words in a PNG file and display it using LogoBitmapFilename. How can I display the file within the space on the left?

Thanks considerate_guy,

It worked but how do I get it to work as follows:-

a) I just need the names to scroll without the left video or top video ?

b) I do not need a title, so when I leave the title as blank, a rectangle without words still appear. How do I get rid of the rectangle ?

c) I need the names to scoll at the centre instead of left or right

d) I have about 50 names to scroll at one go but there are only 7 or 8 lines available. How to increase the rows of names to scroll without leaving a gap ?

Thanks

bfranlin,

For you question, just make an image (or video clip) with that information and put it on the timeline, then apply this title on the selected clip. The image or the video clip will appear on the left side.

Ryan,

It wouldn't take much to modify to do that... as for the number of names, you just keep typing and it will give you more spaces, it's not limited to 8. However, you may just want to look at the 'Scroll, Perspective' title. Choose that animation and when you are typing the text, type each name followed by <Enter>. You'll have a long scrolling list of names without a title, each centered as desired. If you don't like the slight perspective of the text, that can be corrected. Give it a try and tell me how it works.

Hi Mr Considerate_guy,

Thanks for your help.

When you said "... modify ....", you mean modify the xml codes ? I really have no programming knowledge and my IT knowledge is very limited, so I don't have a clue as what to modify.

You are right about pressing enter, more boxes will appear. Thanks for that.

I type the following in the boxes provided to test all the animation:

Test Title
aaaaa bbbbb
aaaaa bbbbb
aaaaa bbbbb
aaaaa bbbbb

I cannot find scroll perspective in credits but I can find them in title. What I saw when I clicked scroll perspective was that only the tst "Test Ttitle" appeared at the centre. the aaaa or bbbb were missing

Yes, 'Scroll, Perspective' is under one-line titles. After you pick it, go to the area to enter text. In the box, just type all your names separated by <Enter>.

Thanks Blaine. I tried your suggestion, created a jpg file with words written in it, and it worked. However, the image (words) got squeezed to the left. Is it possible to just fill the space in the left with the image, instead of having it fill the whole screen and then squeezed into half of the space?
