| When people say to use an overlay, what exactly do they mean? Thanks! |

They mean to transition between two video clips using a 'Compositing' transition called 'Comp A add B'. If you make the transition close to the full length of the clip... the result is that the second clip appears overlayed on the first. You can do this to overlay rain effects, dream sequences, explosions, sniper scopes, or most anything you can think of...

.... and from another corner, there's the Title Overlay track that, with a custom xml file, can be used to place a logo or other image over the video... I refer to that as an overlay.
so it might depend on who is talking and thinking about what... |

| I see from some of your other posts, that you are already familiar with the Comp A add B transition, so you were probably instead asking about title overlays, in which case PJ has described it well... |
