Diagonal, down right
Posted: 30 Sep 2012 08:54 AM
how do i find the xml file so i can see how to edit it...

what i would like to try and do is a image wipe, but from a diaganol option

to expand on that, come in from a corner and go of left or right, basically the oposite

and while im on "image wipes"...how do you slow them down? i keep tinkering with the xml but cant seem to do it...only way i can do it at the mo is to lengthen the picture merge...

ty in advance

All the standard transitions have their XML embedded within one of the DLL files. If you are able to extract that you can examine the XML. Alternatively, they've described some of that here.

They mention that Diagonal, down right uses SMPTE wipe #41 (NW to SE). I don't see any mention of SMPTE wipe #42 (NE to SW). The one parameter I do see is "Out" which you might be able to set to FALSE to reverse the direction (e.g. SE to NW).

If you want more help on creating a custom version of the Diagonal, Down Right wipe, to play with, let me know.

Oh, your other question about speed... all transitions have their speed based on the duration of the transition. If you have a 1 second transition, it will take 1 second. If you have a 10 second transitions, it will take 10 seconds (and obviously be slower). Nothing in the XML controls that.

Okay, I experimented a bit more and came up with 3 additional diagonal wipes. There's an additional parameter called TwoWayDiagonal which I just arbitrarily set to a different value (not 'Slash') and it reversed the direction.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="TFX">
<Transition name="Diagonal, Up Left" iconid="9" guid="Diagonal, Up Left" comment="Blaine's Diagonal Wipes, Post #255346">
<Param name="Animation" value="Wipe" />
<Param name="Mesh" value="Diagonal Down" />
<Param name="Edge" value="Soft" />
<Param name="TwoWayDiagonal" value="Slash" />
<Param name="Out" value="FALSE" />
<Param name="GradientWidth" value="0.4" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Diagonal, Down Left" iconid="6" guid="Diagonal, Down Left">
<Param name="Animation" value="Wipe" />
<Param name="Mesh" value="Diagonal Down" />
<Param name="Edge" value="Soft" />
<Param name="TwoWayDiagonal" value="Backslash" />
<Param name="Out" value="TRUE" />
<Param name="GradientWidth" value="0.4" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Diagonal, Up Right" iconid="6" guid="Diagonal, Up Right">
<Param name="Animation" value="Wipe" />
<Param name="Mesh" value="Diagonal Down" />
<Param name="Edge" value="Soft" />
<Param name="TwoWayDiagonal" value="Backslash" />
<Param name="Out" value="FALSE" />
<Param name="GradientWidth" value="0.4" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy this text into Notepad and save it as DiagonalWipes.xml on your desktop. Then copy it over to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. After you restart Movie Maker you should have the 3 additional diagonal wipe directions.

great stuff...works well
ive tryed to add an image, so it becomes an image wipe, and im guessing its not right... as its just comes up a black screen :(

here`s what ive done, your'll see ive kinda merged yours and a dpl imagewipe...ive tried manyways but this is the only one that actually appear on the transition menu, but as i say its black

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="5607" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="ShaderTFX.ShaderTransition">
<Transition name="Diagonal, Up Left" iconid="0" guid="Diagonal, Up Left" comment="Blaine's Diagonal Wipes, Post #255346" ShaderModel="2">
<Param name="TextureFile" value="%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\DPL ImageWipes\mgd_bottleV_alpha.png" />
<Param name="Animation" value="Wipe" />
<Param name="Mesh" value="Diagonal Down" />
<Param name="Edge" value="Soft" />
<Param name="TwoWayDiagonal" value="Slash" />
<Param name="Out" value="FALSE" />
<Param name="GradientWidth" value="0.4" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

hopefully you can see what i have done wrong and edit it accordingly
(thanx for your help with this) just gives a few more options to the transition menu :)

The short answer is you can't blend transitions this way.

A transition is tied to a specific TransitionDLL. The built-in ones use "TFX". Custom ones usually require ShaderTFX or another homegrown DLL. Then there's a "Technique" that must match with something that is in a specified .fx file. And that .fx file specifies which parameters it will accept.

What you are doing is equivalent to taking pieces from two or three different jigsaw puzzles and trying to make them fit into a new picture. It won't work.

d*mnSad

i kinda assumed that where the current image wipes go left/right/up and down that it could be done from the corners also....

ty for doing the wipes though, its nice to have some extra transitions :)

I assume you are talking about Patrick's Image Wipes. I'm not sure if he has done any diagonal wipes. I think they only went in the 4 orthogonal directions. I suppose the .fx file could be modified to do such a wipe, but it would take some effort, along with knowledge of how the wipe was coded in the shader.

(2nd time of writing this as i clicked cancel, DOH!) lol

yeah its Patricks wipes and someone called susan..

ive looked at the .fx file and i have got a clue....a few words i could change but i have no idea if that would work....there are no "values" - i mean screen location start and finish in it so i dont understand it

thanx anyway buddy

You'd need to understand how to write pixel shaders in an .fx file. In general, you are telling it how to draw every pixel on the screen given a couple of inputs (in a transition there is clip A and clip B). The wipe transitions that Patrick has done get more complicated with an additional texture input from an image.
