multiline text appearing word (or character) at a time
Posted: 17 Aug 2012 12:10 PM
Is there any way to have text appear from left to right either word or character at a time?
In addition I would like to have multiple lines and be able to position the text box anywhere
on the screen. I think I know how to achieve the last two items via xml, but am unaware as to the possibility of the entrance scheme.

There's the EntranceEffect or MainEffect called 'EffectTypeWriter'... is that what you mean?

Blaine, thanks for the reply. Yes, the Typewriter effect is what I'm looking for as an entrance
animation. I will have about 5 short lines (10-15 total words) that I want to quickly appear (maybe
3-5 sec.), then to remain stationary for a longer period (variable -- maybe 20 sec.), and finally fade out. The entrance & exit times can be more or less fixed, but the stationary time needs to be what gets varied by using the size handles on the time display. If you could give some directions it would be most appreciated. I have written a few XML's, but it has been a couple of years and I was a rank amateur even then ;)

You've pretty much described your entrance and exit parameters:

<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectTypeWriter"/>
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="5.0"/>
<Param name="MainEffect" value="EffectNone"/>
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade"/>
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="1.0"/>

I would create a standard title (Animation/InternalName = "TitleStandard") which would give you a single block of text. You'll have to decide the location, initial font size, etc. If you can describe one of the standard titles that is similar, you can base it off of that.

By the way, is this for WMM 2.x (XP) or WMM 6.0 (Vista/Win7)?

Blaine,
I'm using MM 6.0 on Win7.

Here is an
example
of a text
block like
I desire.

Typewriter in ---> pause ---> fade out
(3s) ---> (10-15s) ---> (2s)

What does your XML look like? Using your example times, just use these values instead:

<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectTypeWriter"/>
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="3.0"/>
<Param name="MainEffect" value="EffectNone"/>
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade"/>
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="2.0"/>

Also, you didn't tell me what title you are basing this off of? Is it a basic title with text in the middle, or is it positioned elsewhere?

I was planning to use Ayumi Random Titles substituting your code. That way I could position the text in the 25 different locations ala Ayumi. I have a video on which I want various text, but it must be locations that won't interfere with the images. When I get a little time I'll see how it works. Thanks for all your help.

Using Ayumi's "random position" xml and modifying it as per your suggestion, I have (for the first position):

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="TFX">
<Title name="Typewriter Title Position 1" iconid="13" guid="Typewriter Title Position 1">
<Param name="Animation" value="TitleStandard"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Randomly Positioned Title"/>
<Param name="ShadowOutline" value="Shadow" />
<Paragraph>
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="3.0"/>
<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="Typewriter" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="MainEffect" value="EffectNone"/>
<Param name="ExitDuration" value="2.0"/>
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="EntrancePosition" value="0.16 0.16" evaluation="Linear"/>
<Param name="MainPosition" value="0.16 0.16"/>
<Param name="ExitPosition" value="0.16 0.16" evaluation="Linear"/>
</Paragraph>

The entrance doesn't "typewrite," but the exit does fade. What did I do wrong??

It's EffectTypeWriter, not just Typewriter.

Thanks, Blaine, for you patience and willingness to share your knowledge. I made the change you suggested, but the title doesn't "typewrite" in -- it is instantly in.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">

Apparently I've been mistaken about EffectTypewriter. It only seems to work as the main effect, not in the entrance or exit effect.

I did a bit of rework of your code and came up with the following. There are two pairs of titles for each of 9 positions. The first title does the typing on. The second does the display and fade away. Use the same text in both titles and adjust the durations accordingly.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="TFX">
<Title name="Typewriter Appear - Position 1" iconid="13" guid="Typewriter Appear - Position 1">

<Paragraph>
<Param name="MainEffect" value="EffectTypeWriter"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.05 0.05 0.3 0.3"/>
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Top"/>
<Param name="HorizontalAlignment" value="Left"/>
<Param name="MainPosition" value="0.5 0.5"/>
</Paragraph>

<Title name="Typewriter Fade - Position 1" iconid="13" guid="Typewriter Fade - Position 1">

Wow, pretty clever solution; thanks Blaine. Although this is a little awkward, I can make it work. I'll have to alter the position of the bounding rectangles to suit my particular applications, but that is within my capabilities. This kind of text animation might be a good idea for Michael Feerer of Pixlan [he probably has more than enough ideas to keep him busy ;)] Thanks again.

I'm not sure if Pixelan does titles... personally, since the newer Movie Maker 2011 and 2012 let you pick the position of the title, I wish they would add back some of the animations from WMM 2.x and 6.0 (like Typewriter).

I assume that you have gently suggested this to MS ;)

BTW, Pixelan's TitleFX in Wizards does a nice job on titles. The limitations in this case
are that they are limited to 1 or 2 lines and no typewriter animation -- although there are many other animations to choose from. For those who don't (or can't) write their own code, it is
a nice product.
