Overlap Two Custom Titles
Posted: 01 Dec 2011 06:23 PM
MM6, Vista
Hi, I’m a newbie to Windows Movie Maker. I downloaded and am using “Blaine’s Bottom Scoreboard” (I’ll post the xml below in case that is helpful). It works great to insert a single title overlay in the middle of a video. But, occasionally I will have so much text that I want to spread the text over two back-to-back titles. In this case, I would like to overlap the titles or do something so the background that has popped-up doesn’t disappear for a half second then reappear.

I found one post [two minor problems - PostID=233534] that said “I have found that I can overlap titles, but only if the time marker is located at the very end of the first title. If it is located elsewhere, the second title will just bump up against the first.” This is not true for me. I’m guessing it is because I am using a custom title.

I would appreciate any help that I could get with this.
Thank you in advance,
Mark

Re: Overlap Two Custom Titles

I have an idea on how this could be accomplished. It would essentially need 3 custom titles, rather than just one. The title I created before would slide on the screen at the beginning, then slide off at the end. But if I instead created 3 additional versions you could have this:
1) Slide on the screen and stay.
2) Start on the screen and stay.
3) Start on the screen and slide off at the end.

You would use #1 for the first title. You would use #2 for any other titles. Finally you would use #3 for the last title.

I'm going to have to play a little with this to see if the box sizing will stay the same, to see if the fading of the text should be kept or not, etc. While I'm working on that, are there any other suggestions you would make for the title?

First, here's a sample clip showing how these subtitles look.

1. Copy/Paste the code below into Notepad
2. Save the file as SubtitleSliderBlack.xml on your Desktop or in your Documents folder.
3. Copy that file over to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX (if the subfolder doesn't exist create it).
4. Restart Windows Movie Maker (WMM 6.0)

To apply the title:
Tools > Titles and Credits... > 'Title on the selected clip'
Click 'Change the Title Animation' and there will be 4 new title animations toward the end of the one-line titles that you can choose:
* Subtitle Slider (in/out) Black
* Subtitle Slider (in) Black
* Subtitle Slider (non-moving) Black
* Subtitle Slider (out) Black

If you have one subtitle, that you want to slide in and out, use 'Subtitle Slider (in/out).

If you have multiple subtitles in a row, use 'Subtitle Slider (in)' for the first one, 'Subtitle Slider (non-moving)' for all subtitles in the middle and 'Subtitle Slider (out)' for the last one.

Blaine,

Thank you very much for all your help. The Subtitle Slider is exactly what I am looking for and you have been very helpful.

One funny sidenote (it was frustrating at the time), but maybe some other xml newbie can learn from my mistake. When you posted the solution, I read it in my yahoo email account, instead of on the forum website. In my yahoo email, the xml code for the solution displayed as follows...

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Titles>
...
...
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects> <!-- Note, I had to use '[' instead of '<' to get the color tags to display in the preview window.

I noticed that the color tags were not something that I had seen in other custom subtitle xml files that I had installed, but I included them in the file, because I thought there were part of the solution. That little mistake prevented me from being able to the Subtitle Sliders in the Title Animation list until I finally removed the color tags.

Thanks again for all your help.
Sincerely,
Mark

Yeah, I always enclose my VIsta XML inside of color tags so it appears in purple on the forums. I guess I never realized that the email would include them too, but that makes sense.

You can change this line:
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="#B0000000" />

The color value is AARRGGBB
AA is the alpha value (00 = fully transparent, FF = fully opaque)
RR is the red value
GG is the green value
BB is the blue value

Re: Overlap Two Custom Titles

Here are some more details that can help set an opacity/color value.

Opacity value (AA):
30 (~20% opacity)
50 (~30% opacity)
80 (~50% opacity)
B0 (~70% opacity)
E0 (~90% opacity)

Color value (RRGGBB):
Use this table of HTML color values

So for example, the current color is 70% opaque (B0) with a color of black (000000).

If you instead wanted a background that was 30% opaque (50) with a color of BlueViolet (8A2BE2) you would use:

<Param name="BannerColor1" value="#508A2BE2" />

Re: Overlap Two Custom Titles

These titles are set to a single color value for the background. That's so you can have the transparency set as desired. Currently they are set to (80% black = B0000000). Since you want a different color, replace the 4 places where you see B0000000 in the XML with your desired value.

If instead, you want to keep black and have other colors, you would need to make additional copies of the code. Let me show you what you would need to change to make a whole new set...

First for each Title, you would need to update the name and the guid to be something different. Then you would update all the banner colors. Finally you would save the XML with a new name.

If you take out the color line completely, you can set the color within Movie Maker. But when you set the transparency, both the text and the background will become transparent. That's why I set it explicitly in the XML. But for the sake of flexibility, you might want to remove the lines completely.

If so, delete this line everywhere it appears (4 times) in the XML:
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="#B0000000" />

Yes, I just tested. I think it defaults to gray, but you can pick the background color easily. Remember it will start out with 0% transparent, so if you want some transparency, increase that too. I wouldn't go beyond about 20% though.

Here's the revised version with selectable background colors:

1. Copy/Paste the code below into Notepad
2. Save the file as SubtitleSlider.xml on your Desktop or in your Documents folder.
3. Copy that file over to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX (if the subfolder doesn't exist create it).
4. Restart Windows Movie Maker (WMM 6.0)

Use the XML above. When you go to 'Change text font and colors' you should be able to play with the background color and the transparency.

Try creating a custom color. Click on the background color selector but instead of picking one of the standard colors, click 'Define Custom Color'.

Looking at your videos, this seems to be a close match:
Hue = 140
Saturation = 190
Lightness = 120

Then click 'Add to Custom Colors'

The reason it is darker is because you are putting it over a black background with transparency. If you don't want the transparency, just set it to 0% and it will be the same color.

As for the outline, if you don't like that, just remove this line from each of the transitions in the XML:
<Param name="ShadowOutline" value="Shadow" />
