Off center circle in/out transition?
Posted: 11 Jun 2011 09:32 PM
Hi there.

I was wondering if it would be possible to make an off center circle in circle out transition where the image closes in on one particular point in the video or expands from it, in the way old silent films used to do. I've checked the XML code for my current cricle transitions file and it doesn't appear to have an XYCentre param, so I'm not even sure if it's possible, but I'm no programming wiz and might easily have overlooked something. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks.

Welcome to the forums.

One way to do it would be to use gradient masks but we'd need to know which version of Movie Maker you're using and the desired size and placement of the circle.

Thank you Neophyte.

I'm using Vista, and I'm looking for a placement corresponding with a soft circular black vignette positioned slightly off center to both left and right (depending on the scene). My current code for the vigette looks like this:

<Effect name="DPL Vignette 4x3 Circle Black" iconid="1" guid="DPL Vignette 4x3 Circle Black" shadermodel="2">
<ShaderFilename value="DPL Vignette FX.fx"/>
<Technique value="Vignette"/>
<Semantics>
<BackGroundLevel type="float" value="1.00" />
<RadiusInner type="float" value="0.30" />
<RadiusOuter type="float" value="0.60" />
<XYCenter type="float2" value="0.5, 0.5" />
<AspectRatio type="float" value="1.77777" />
<BackgroundColor type="color" value="black" />
</Semantics>
</Effect>

with the XYCenter changing to 0.4,0.5 or 0.6,0.5 depending on where I want to place the vignette.

I noticed the aspect ratio in the title was 4:3 while the aspect ratio value in the effect was 1.77777, which is that for 16:9. Whar's the aspect ratio for your project and do you want the vignette area to be a circle or an oval?

Also, do you know how to create gradient masks in whatever image editing program you use?

Sorry for not getting back to you so soon.

The aspect ratio is 16:9

Looking at the vignette in the section of film I wish to work on it appears to be a slight oval, I guess due to the compression of the screen.

I'm unsure how to create gradient masks, but I'd be happy to read up about them before going any further.

I like your idea of using Patrick's Vignette effect. Are you familar with having a parameter value vary over time?

I'm thinking you could do something like the following where the InnerRadius and OuterRadius would both shrink down to nothing... I haven't tested this so you probably want to play with the values.

<Param name="RadiusInner" type="float" evaluation="linear" >
<Point time="0.0" value="0.7" />
<Point time="0.7" value="0.0" />
<Point time="1.0" value="0.0" />
</Param>
<Param name="RadiusOuter" type="float" evaluation="linear" >
<Point time="0.0" value="1.0" />
<Point time="1.0" value="0.0" />
</Param>

If that works, you can do fun things like have it shrink smaller, pause for a little bit, then shrink to nothing. Let me know if you get this working or if you want some assistance.

Nice use of this Vignette effect Blaine.

When reviewing your effects I noticed a slight aura at the inner radius boundary. I measured the intensity and it is just an optical illusion. But noticeable.

I modified the fx code to make the intensity vary with a square progression and I think it looks a bit better. It kind of coasts into full intensity rather than abruptly getting there.

Just Download DPL vignette Effects Installer and install to replace the Vignette effects with the new ones.

Cool, I'll try that later. I saw that discontinuity but didn't think it was too bad as it was.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

What I'm currently doing is taking two identical pieces of footage, putting a vignette on one and doing a regular circle in or circle out transition with a blank black title on the other, saving both files, then editing them both so that the transition stops or starts at precisely where the boundary of the vignette lies. Whilst a little tedious, this allows me to shrink to a small point, hold it for a time, then either expand it again or contract it completely if need be (this would of course require a further piece of the same footage with the transition slightly further along the timeline). Unfrotunately I've only been able to do this with a centered vignette, which is where all of your combined help has been invaluable.
