Compositing vs Chroma Posted: 26 Jul 2005 09:34 AM |
| Could someone share a quick description of the differences between these two methods of combining video. Is it that Chroma is for still-on-video while compositing is for video-on-video? |

Both work for video as well as still.
With the composite transition one can add the colors of one video into the colors of the other. So it is an ADD operation. This means you can only make the movie brighter by using composite ADD transition. Any dark regions in the overlaying video/image come out as transparent or semi-transparent. That is the reason for having black background in such content. Works good for explosions, white fog, clouds etc... where brightness corresponds to its opacity.
Chroma keying works by overlaying a video or still content as it is. It is a REPLACE operation. Maintains the actual pixel colors in the overlaying content. |

Thanks for the excellent explanation.
Could you share some examples of other uses of the composite transition? |

There are lots of examples in the 'Share your Transitions' topic. Kathy (kathokatho) has supplied lots of clips that other members have composited over their videos. Check out the following posts:

Another similar transition is a transluscent blend that shows part of one video overlaid on another (sort of like the halfway point of a fade transition). An example of this is:

| Thanks. I was aware of Katho's clips with the black background that are being used. The blend I had missed. |
