Wow, this little gem of a program does what it says, and
it's free....near as I can tell. Except dude would like to be
credited in movies using his program. Fair enough. Didn't
take me long(maybe an hour) to create a short light saber movie,
but there also are plenty of options to mess around with.
To be honest....this kinda stuff isn't my bag, but with 11 and 13
year old boys who love Star Wars, I guess I will have to make
a battle scene. Nice find C:\

Can you give me a quick explanation of how to get started with LSMaker? We filmed a short scene of us battling with sticks and then I captured it as a DV-AVI within WMM2. I couldn't get it imported into LSMaker. Next I tried capturing the same clip as an .avi within Pinnacle and this time I was able to select it, it said I had 600+ frames and then when I clicked okay it gave an exception. I'm assuming there is some problem with the format, but you must have been successful, so how did you do it?
To summarize the steps I tried:
1) File | New
2) Chose 'purple.jpg' for the color and 'blade.jpg' for the blade
3) On the 'Insert Files...' dialog, clicked 'Add'
4) Chose the 'video 1.avi' that I had captured in Pinnacle (.avi type 2)?
5) It shows 'video 1.avi/1' through 'video 1.avi/676', clicked OK
6) "Access violation at address 00491C10 in module 'LSMaker.exe'. Read of address 00000000."
Another question (once I get this working), do you do the sabers separately (e.g. all frames for purple lightsaber, then all frames for red lightsaber) or do you do both sabers on the frame and go to the next?
BTW, care to share your sample movie?

Hi Blaine,
Here is what I did...but I am not an expert on this deal.
Maybe C:\ or others who have been using this for a while have
some better advice. First off..I was lazy, so I just used my
digital camera to film a short sequence, creating an MPEG
file. I converted that quickly in MM2 to an AVI. Then I did every
thing you did, but at the point where you import file, and
click the ADD button...I switched the video import method
to "direct show(uses temp file - slow). I had also hit the same
problem you did(access violation). I assumed it was because
I was using a converted MPEG file. Anyway...try that.
This is frame by frame...and I ran 3 passes, one for each saber,
and a 3rd for the clash. This might be where someone else
has found a better way. My "1 hour learned and movie made"
was a short movie clip with 1 son. The 2nd movie I made took
1 hour of just right click, left click and it was still a 3 second clip.
This is a labor of love I guess.(unless I am doing it wrong)
I will post a sample movie...I need to fix something up first

Thanks, I just now got it to work, but actually I used AviSynth to help me past the first error. I'm now coloring my son's saber. I'll do my saber next and then the clashes. If that all goes well I'm going to try adding the sound effects.

Ok..I haven't done the sound effects yet, because I needed to
get some sound clips. It looks like a little different process,
assign a key to a sound effect...and then run through frame by
frame, and hitting a key. That will be a later step for me.
I also just figured out that you don't need to do multi passes.
There is a layer button. Layer 1 and 2 for each saber, and layer
3 for your clashes. Still...each saber needs to be done manually.

Just got done coloring all 676 frames for my son's saber and realized that the window was showing all of the frame, so when I thought his saber was going out of view, it really wasn't. I'm going to have to do some tweaking/rekeying of a few hundred frames... Nonetheless, the results are cool!

...make that "was not showing all of the frame..." It's obviously a good idea to maximize your window before you start coloring. Also with AviSynth I seem to get a "video desynch" error when I try to preview it too many times. Maybe I'll try the DirectShow option mentioned by dlk.

Ha...that is the problem I had to fix. 1/2 the saber not lit
because it was out of the original viewing screen.
Well...here is my sample. It's crude and I hesitate to post it,
but the original MPEG was low quality, and then when I
imported the uncompressed AVI file into MM2 to add a
title....MM2 didn't like it so much. The preview window only
played 1 second of the clip, but it did render. However it
seemed too fast, so I slowed it down. But this gives the
general idea.

| I got the error message "Access violation at address 00491C10 in module 'LSMaker.exe'. Read of address 00000000." but then I tried it again and it worked. I don't know what's going on with that. |

| Yes it is for Titles. But it can easily be transferred over to a custom credit... Why dont you have a go at making custom titles and credits.... This might be some help. |

... and I'm using half of my weekly newsletter in the issue going out tomorrow as a tutorial about how to use LSMaker... starting with a DV-AVI clip from my camcorder, turning a sword in the clip into a light saber, exporting the new file as a DV-AVI, and using the modified clip in Movie Maker where it aligns perfectly with audio of the sword-fight that's been there waiting for the video of the new clip...
I agree that it's a little quirky, but no more so than I'd expect for beta software... but it worked, didn't crash, and didn't lose any of my work. |

I've used LSmaker, it seems great, a question:
What is the best way to export your project from LSmaker as a .avi? I tried some of the default ones, but the quality wasn't very good. Which codec would probably be the best? |

I've been using the Panasonic DV codec lately... it's full DV-AVI quality... here's a link to get and install it.

Hi, the URL for that application doesn't seem to be working.
Could somebody please send me the file, or perhaps upload it via yousendit.com or something.
It would be really appreciated. My nephew just saw the last Star Wars movie and he's light sabre crazy now.
