"Recording" effect
Posted: 09 Jun 2008 08:39 PM
I'd like an effect that places a flashing red "REC" in the top corner (doesn't matter which one) of the video, as though it is being recorded on a video camera.

If you have ShaderTFX you could use DPL FlashingTFX view post 165434 and DPL TFX Web Site.

Make a 640x480 PNG image with a red "Rec" wherever you want it and the rest of the image transparent. Call it Rec.png and save in the ...\DPL Flashing TFX Images\ folder. Here is a sample Rec Image (Right Click and "Save Target As...")

Then the XML (FlashingRec.xml) to put in the ...\AddOnTFX\ folder:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="5627" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="ShaderTFX.ShaderEffect">

<Effect name="DPL FlashOverlayE Rec" iconid="0" guid="DPL FlashOverlayE Rec" ShaderModel="2">
<ShaderFilename value="DPL Flashing TFX.fx"/>
<Technique value="DPLFlashEffect"/>
<TextureFile value="%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\DPL Flashing TFX Images\Rec.png"/>
<Semantics>
<FlashOverlayOn type="bool" value="true" />
<FlashCycleTime type="float" value="1.5" />
</Semantics>
</Effect>

</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Works great, as always, thanks. Is 1.5 sec the normal time for "rec" flash? Well, thanks again. Oh yes, I found the iconnumber topic. Thanks for the link. I need some more time but I'm very busy so sorry but it can take some more time.

You're both welcome.

I don't know if 1.5 secs is normal, but it is easy to change. Just revise the 1.5 in the XML to what you want.

Also, there is a FlashDutyCycle parameter that can change the % on time. Put

<FlashDutyCycle type="float" value="0.2" />

in the XML semantics section and the Rec will be visible 20% of the cycle time, or 0.8 for 80% etc.

Hey!
I don't get where to save the REC picture.
I tried to create a new folder in "Shared" but when I opened windows movie maker the effect wasn't working...

So... what do I do? Can you explain me better please? :D

Hi Maddy, for this approach, ShaderTFX must be installed and operating unexpired or registered and then DPL Flashing must be installed and operating. view post 126998

Then you can put the XML in ...\AddOnTFX and the REC image in ...\AddOnTFX\DPL Flashing TFX Images.

Good luck, PatrickL

Hi Patrick,

I really need help adding a logo to the bottom right of my videos but I am really struggling. Is there anyway I can speak to you to solve this? I have followed all the various guides and downloaded programmes but just cant seem to do it. I know my way around a computer fairly well so this is really puzzling me. I have wasted a lot of time at work with this!

Please help....

Welcome to the forums Alex.

Take a look at the Rec image shown earlier in this thread.

For your logo, just make an full screen image like the Rec image, but with the logo you want in the position you want. Make the background transparent (PNG is nice).

Then edit the xml to add your logo, or just replace the Rec.png with your logo image called Rec.png.

Good luck, PatrickL

Hi PatrickL,

First of all, thank you for your swift reply.

I currently use Windows Vista. I have created a logo I would like to use in a PSP X3 trial version. I have saved this into, Program Files/Movie Maker/Shared/AddOnTFX. I have copy pasted the .xml code into notepad and have also saved it to, Program Files/Movie Maker/Shared/AddOnTFX. The files are saved as mylogo.gif and mylogo.xml respectively. Are these case sensitive?

I have then opened Windows Movie Maker, dragged the video file I want to use into the timeline, then on the left hand side I have clicked 'Titles and credits', then 'Title on selected clip', then 'Change the title animation' and there is no option to add my logo anywhere.

Where am I going wrong?

This problem is making me go prematurely bald so any help you can give would be fantastic.

Alex

When I done the xml code on notepad and saved it in AddonTFX, I restarted Windows Movie Maker 6, & when I looked at the effect it was just a blank box with a red 'X' in it. When I dragged the effect on the clip, the clip just tuned black, and I couldn't see anything... How do I fix this?! This problem has happened to me earlier with different effects. Please reply soon!

Did you load all the requisite packages yet? Or you go to my website and get the camcorder overlay?
