DPL Flashing Transitions and Effects for ShaderTFX

See a Video Demo at Demo Video

If you like what you see, Download and run the installer exe. You may need administrator privilege. It has a proper uninstaller.
You must have ShaderTFX installed and operating unexpired or registered.

In Movie Maker forums, I have seen some requests for various kinds of flashing effects and transitions. This package can accommodate some of those requests. The basis is introduction of a real-time clock to control the flashing. It's time period and duty cycle may be specified.

ColorFlash Transitions - This one just morphs to a single color in the first half of the transition based on the brightness of the first image. Then in the second half of the transition, it morphs from the color to the second image, based on the brightness of the second image. Similar to Rehan's Electrics where the duration of the morphing is controlled by the amount of overlapping of the two images, like all transitions.

ImageFlash Transitions - This one superimposes an overlay image/color on a fade from the first image to the second image. It may be flashing with the real-time clock or on solid, and it's transparency may be specified. Also the size and position of the overlay image/color may be specified.

ColorFlash Effects - This one just alternates between a color and the image at the real-time clock's controlled rate and duty cycle. The color may have it's transparency specified.

ImageFlash Effects - This one superimposes a flashing or solid overlay image on the original image. The overlay image transparency and the size and position of the image may be specified as well as its flash rate.

This is a kit. The provided effects and transitions probably will not satisfy your needs. You can get a lot of mileage just by recoding the rectangle parameters, the color parameter and the cycletime/dutycycle parameters in the XML file. Check out the DPL Flashing TFX.xml file in the AddOnTFX folder for templates and seeing which parameters are exposed. A generic Button Icon is provided at iconid="0".

Also, images are fairly easy to generate. 640x480 is one good canvas size to work with, but most anything will work and the aspect ration may be controlled with the Rectangle parameter.

In the overlay images, make the image transparent where you want to see the background. Check out the sample skull image in the DPL Flashing TFX Images folder in the AddOnTFX folder.

The real-time clock's cycle time probably should be a multiple of the frame time (1/30 sec for NTSC and 1/25 sec for PAL) to get rid of any strobe type effects.

The download link doesn't work.
Is there another why?
Like, the XMLs?

Comcast currently is revamping the personal website interface and it isn't available now. Hopefully soon.

Thanks for your patience.

If the effects and transitions preview properly (i.e. double click on the effect plays in the preview window) then perhaps the type of clip on the timeline is not compatible.

If it will not preview properly, then it sounds like the "DPL Flashing TFX.fx" file did not get installed in the c:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\ folder.

Also, there should be a "DPL Flashing TFX Images" folder in the "AddOnTFX" folder.

I actually had the same issue, only in reverse. I'm still having some quirky problems but the issue is around ensuring that your machine has all the updates. The video wasn't showing up in preview and the final project wouldn't show the video either. So I installed Vista SP1 and I updated all the drivers on my machine. I now can see the transitions but I'm still have issues with the DPL but I'm working on eliminating one by one what is causing it. Everything else works fine but the ShaderTFX and DPL. Make sure you have a registered copy of ShaderTFX.

One reason can be badly behaving video card or drivers. These effects & transitions use the pixel shaders causing considerable strain on the GPU so not having a good graphics card can cause problems.

How would I go about changing the code if I wanted the flashing effect to cycle through the color spectrum??

StarMagic, here is one way.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="5627" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="ShaderTFX.ShaderEffect">

<Effect name="DPL FlashColorE Cycle" iconid="0" guid="DPL FlashColorE Cycle" ShaderModel="2">
<ShaderFilename value="DPL Flashing TFX.fx"/>
<Technique value="DPLFlashEffect"/>
<Semantics>
<FlashCycleTime type="float" value="0.2" />
<FlashColorOn type="bool" value="true" />
<FlashColor evaluation="step" type="float4" >
<Point time="0.00" value="1,1,1,1"/> <!-- white -->
<Point time="0.20" value="1,0,0,1"/> <!-- red -->
<Point time="0.40" value="0,1,0,1"/> <!-- green -->
<Point time="0.60" value="0,0,1,1"/> <!-- blue -->
<Point time="0.80" value="0,1,1,1"/> <!-- cyan -->
</FlashColor>
<FlashAlpha type="float" value="0.5"/>
</Semantics>
</Effect>

</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

This flashes white for a while, then red etc. You can vary FlashAlpha for less or more dramatic and make evaluation="linear" for more subtle changes of color.

Hi Patrick

ShaderTFX recognizes colors as names as well:

<FlashColor evaluation="step" type="float4" >
<Point time="0.00" value="1,1,1,1"/> <!-- white -->
<Point time="0.20" value="1,0,0,1"/> <!-- red -->
<Point time="0.40" value="0,1,0,1"/> <!-- green -->
<Point time="0.60" value="0,0,1,1"/> <!-- blue -->
<Point time="0.80" value="0,1,1,1"/> <!-- cyan -->
</FlashColor>

could be:

<FlashColor evaluation="step" type="color" >
<Point time="0.00" value="white"/>
<Point time="0.20" value="red"/>
<Point time="0.40" value="green"/>
<Point time="0.60" value="blue"/>
<Point time="0.80" value="cyan"/>
</FlashColor>

When using an expired trial, unregistered ShaderTFX, any TFX using an external image file (such as the skull and rec images) will not operate properly and will probably just show a black rectangle where the image should be superimposed.

All other TFXs (without external images) will function properly.

Thanks effectsdude.

See my website (below) for all of the stuff I have played with and contributed to the Vista Movie Maker users. Mostly using Rehan's ShaderTFX. Rehan's ShaderTFX gave me a wonderful retirement hobby and I'm still playing in that sandbox for a while.

Awesome effects.
2 questions: How do you change the color of the Flashing(Ex: The blue flashes) to a different color? And how do you change the flash rate(how fast it can flash per second)?

firereddude22, see DPL Flashing XML App Notes for some info. Also look at the XML file to see the parameters in question.

The flash rate should be quite a bit less than the frames rate of the clip to appear consistant.

Thanks for the flash tip, but the link leads to the WMM.net homepage. Is it a broken link? Because I don't see any info based on the effects and transitions.

Thanks. Sorry but I have ONE last answer/request I don't think I understood in your website,
How do I change the colors of the flashes? Could I have an example on where in the XML file I need to change the letters/numbers to produce a different color for each of the 3 different types of flashes? (Sorry if I'm making it hard on you, I just can't understand where and how to change the XML file without messing up the effects) This is honestly my last request and then i'm done for a while.
