DPL HiLite Effects and Shaped PIP Transitions for ShaderTFX

Sample Demo of these effects and transitions.

If you like what you see, download and run the installer exe at Download The Installer.
You may need administrator privilege. It has a proper uninstaller.
You must have ShaderTFX installed and operating unexpired or registered.

HiLite Effects - These effects are shaped by a mask and the size and position of the high lighting is controlled with rectangle parameters. Two concurrent high lighted areas are allowed, with each having separate control of the position and size, but using the same shaped mask. Borders may be separetly colored or can take the image provided in the mask for its boundaries.

Shaped PIP Transitions - These transitions are shaped by one mask also and the size and position of the PIPs are seperately controlled with rectangle parameters. Here too, the border may be colored or an image taken from the mask.

This is a kit. The provided effects and transitions probably will not satisfy your needs. You can get a lot of mileage just by recoding the rectangle parameters in the XML file. A generic Button Icon is provided at location 0.

Also, masks are fairly easy to generate. 640x480 is a good canvas to work with.

In the Bordered Effects, black where you want the image darker and transparent where you want the high light. Any color in between will be used to place the border color or image. Check out the samples in the DPL HiLite Masks folder in the AddOnsTFX folder.

In the Soft Effects, the mask should be black for dark background, and white for full intensity and levels of gray in between to provide the softness. I just make a black and white image, then apply a gaussian blur of about 20 pixels to the image. The boundaries then soften up with a gray gradient and provide the soft boundaries.

The background (non-highlighted) intensity is set with a strengthBG parameter.

In the Shaped PIPs the same mask as used for the bordered effects works just fine.

Enjoy, PatrickL

Patrick,

These are great as usual! I'll add them to the pinned post.

I was thinking that one could tweak these to come up with a "reverse highlight", or essentially a censoring of certain regions. Outside the shape you'd have the video as normal and inside the shape you could have blurring or pixelation to hide someone's face, a license plate, etc. Are you looking for new ideas to implement? Thanks MMK and CG and I do like some new ideasWink

Here is a first try at "censoring" plus a few more goodies. HiLite Filtered Effects Prototype Video

I think this could use a bit of discussion before finalizing.

The XML can currently be used to control:
- The Mask Image File
- Pixelate block size
- HiLite Intensity and non-HiLite intensity
- Border - On/Off
- Border Color
- Use Mask Image for Border - On/Off
- Color Shade - Color
- Emboss offset size
- Filter Choice
-- Pixelate
-- Inverse (X-Ray)
-- Color Shade
-- GrayScale (Just a White Color Shade)
-- Emboss

For Discussion:
1. I can't seem to get enough PixelShader 2 code space to do 2 HiLite areas. Go to PixelShader 3? - Locks out some people with lesser graphic chips/cards! I'm leaning to stay at Level 2 Shader.

2 What mask shapes standard? Rectangle and Ellipse enough? They can be stretched/squashed to squares and circles!

3. Other filters of interest? Color Pass, Edge Detection, etc. I can't seem to figure out or find blur algorithms.

4. Can the casual user really figure out the Rectangle parameters and modify the XML to make this thing useful? Maybe fishy can build a tutorialPerplexed.

5. Other?

Thanks for any input.

PatrickL

Impressive work!

1. I would probably stick with shader 2 also. If they really wanted to, they could try applying
it twice, couldn't they?

2. In my opinion, circle/square/ellipse/rectangle (e.g. 2 shapes) would be adequate for censoring. But they could always add custom shapes (e.g. stars, hearts, etc.) if they wanted to, right?

3. Blur would be nice... isn't it in the standard parity.fx file? Also, could there be a flag to determine if the effect applied inside or outside of the shape?

4. That is a tricky question... Rehan solved the problem in his Pan&Zoom by allowing the region to be specified either by rectangle or by a predefined grid of lettered rectangles. I really, really wish there was a way to take some video, draw a rectangle at keyframes and then have that saved for use in an XML file. Too bad WMM doesn't allow that or that there isn't such a utility. Actually what would be really cool would be to have motion tracking where you point to a feature on a face and it then tracks that and applies the effect there... nevermind I'm dreaming again. I think we'll get some people that can handle it and others that might need some hand holding. A tutorial would be great though.

I dont understand most of this but i look forward to your next release of these. I am slowly learning how pixel shaders work, and hope to make a .fx file one day. But keep up the good work.

Blaine, thanks for your prompt response. Insightful as always.

1. OK, Shader 2 it is.

2. OK, Rectangle and Ellipse it is. Yes, easy for others to add more custom masks.

3. OK, flag for inside/outside. Tried it, and it works well. What to use it for?
Blur-Hmmm. The built-in one is 2D gaussian but only 7 elements. Not very blurry. I imagine a performance problem with a larger radix, especially in the vertical direction. I think I'll skip blur, just so it wont be continually complained about. The pixelate is quit effective for hiding/censoring with the blocksize parameter.

4. Yea, unless you (all) can come up with something, I'll leave it up to the more motivated to learn the xml and the helpers to help when legitimately needed.
I'll help tooSmiley

Here is Proto2 and probably the final demo Demo Video 2 Haven't figured out why my movies are coming out 720x480 these days.?? I'll get it though.

I have to play golf tomorrowWinkso I'll get back to playing here and get the final packaging out soon. I like this retirement thing (except for the age factor).

Regards, PatrickL

I can imagine the reverse effect for doing something similar to highlight. Or to have the outside grayscale and the inside color.

Hi Patrick L,

I found out very late, that you made something new! And I have to say I love it. Only again, I have something to complain (as always, yes, I'm annoying, I knowTongue out Wink) about... I really, really think this is great stuff. Like searchlights and stuff on the wall, what I wanted. And these ideas are really great! But your really spoil them with those colored borders. That's what I think, please don't blame me on this, but they are in my view childish!
Yes, I didn't read the first post well and I'll check the xml's!Wink?

If you make these xml's with those special idea's and bring them out, without borders would be great. I'm more a fan of professional stuff, and without borders this can be used fantastic.

I didn't know this was possible. A couple of more idea's (all in it):
- mirror
- 3D Ripple
- Blaines Bubble Warp
- Bloom in & Out
- Filmage
- All colors (tint?)
- Mega Ripple 2 (my edit @ pinned post)
- RehanFX Electric colors
- Zoomblur in it
- vague

Lol, but much.

I hope you will reply and you're right, this would be to much to do yourself.

TheOnPb

Thanks for the filter ideas.

From above:

The XML can currently be used to control:
- Border - On/Off
- Border Color
- Use Mask Image for Border - On/Off
- Color Shade - Color

I get the impression that you don't like bordersWink.

hey, i just got an idea, what if i wanted to use a negative tint effect on a clip, but have it like your hilite fx.

ill try to explain.

lets say instead of covering the entire video with the efffect, i'm thinking it would look pretty cool if i or sum1 esle could make the effefct stretch from one side of the vid to the other in the size of a letterbox, no movement, and be vertically centered
--------------------
I
--------------------I
--------------------I
I
--------------------I

ok, i drew a picture to illustrate, the whole image is the video, and the I's represnet the sides, and the left cutoff is the left side respectively, there is a segment in the middle mad with dashes where a possible negative effect could be applied, does anybody think they could do this?

DANCE KIRBY!!!

I think you could if you would read this thread and view post 164790 carefully.Wink

Start with

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="5626" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="ShaderTFX.ShaderEffect">

<Effect name="My HiLiteF2 CircleB X-Ray" iconid="3" guid="My HiLiteF2 CircleB X-Ray" ShaderModel="2">
<ShaderFilename value="DPL HiLite Filter Effect.fx"/>
<Technique value="HiLiteBFAEffect"/>
<TextureFile value="%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\DPL HiLite Filter Masks\OvalB.png"/>
<Semantics>
<FilterNum type="int" value= "2" /> <!-- X-Ray -->
<RectA type="float4" value="0,0,1,1" />
</Semantics>
</Effect>

</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

then make a mask to be what you want.

Have fun, PatrickL
