Bloom and Negative Effects for Vista
Posted: 15 Nov 2007 03:58 AM
It's probably easier to explain these effects with a sample video

The first pair of effects are called 'Bloom Out' and 'Bloom In'. You've probably seen them used as a transition on TV. Essentially the picture gets very bright and the light "blooms" to fill the screen. On the other side, the light diminishes to show the next scene. It's different than a standard fade, or even a fade through white. It's hard to explain, but the video should show it.

The second effect is the 'Negative' effect which essentially reverses all the colors in your video to be their opposite shade, much like a photographic negative (if you know what that is).

Both are available for Download from my website

a few things

1) wow... the bloom effects are beautiful.

2) is there a way to have a gradations in the effects in percentaage (10% 30% 80% etc. ) and have that maintained throughout the entire clips rather then fading in our out.

i was playing with the effect on a video clip and there was a point in the bloom in/out where it created an environment that feels very much like a dream state, a sort of bleached or washed out lighting that quite beautiful.

3) i have another question for you about percentage for desaturation of color but will find that thread to ask about it

thank you so much

If you look at the code in the .xml, you can vary 3 parameters (Blur, BlurScale, Saturation) over time. Or you could have them be fixed. Feel free to play with creating versions that don't change.

Hi Blaine,

I have zero, nada, knowledge of xml codes and their logic. I have been spending the past two days playing hours on end trying to write the xml codes for the bloom effects percentage.

I tried looking at how you wrote up the Desaturation codes to see if i can somehow find a pattern and apply it to the Bloom effects. Sorry i really butchered your work.

I keep getting costant error message when i tried to open it up in explorer:

Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Program Files/Movie Maker/Shared/AddOnTFX/b...

I think the effects you created are quite beautiful. i am trying to get the same look that the diffuse tool in photoshop does where the lighting is brighter and the pictures becomes a bit more washed out which the bloom effects does. but i am trying to fixed the levels.

Please help if you can ....here is a sample of what i was playing with .. again i apologize for frankensteining your codes ... i am pretty much going at this blind

Try saving to your computer first, then running the installer.

If you mean they aren't working when you use them, then perhaps your graphics card isn't powerful enough.

More details please, so I can help you further.

It's only 366KB and it takes about 1 second to download on high-speed internet. Be sure you clicked 'Save', not 'Run'.

I saved the effects to my computer, and restarted my WMM, but they don't appear in the effects area.

I opened up the folder with the installers again and ran each one of them, then restarted my computer; but the effects STILL didn't show up.

Am I doing something wrong?

The length of an effect is dependent on the length of the clip. So if you want it to happen quicker, just split the clip so that you have the last second (or less) of the clip. Apply the effect to just that part.

Save the .msi file first, then run it. Sometimes you'll get this error if you try to directly run it from the web.
