Moving Logo Effects using Shader TFX
Posted: 27 Sep 2007 10:18 AM
These 7 effects demonstrate using the Overlay capabilities of Rehans Shader TFX. The overlay fx file is a slightly tweaked version of rehanfx_overlay.fx allowing colored borders.

See a demo at DPL Moving Logo Effects Demo1

The demo shows moving logos with varying transparency so watermarking is available. Also the Saucerman shows the logos can be moved off-screen and varied in size.

Download the installation file at DPL Moving Logo Installation Package. Download, unzip then run the exe file. A proper uninstaller is provided.

Read the XML file to see the parameters available and examples of using them.

Report any problems (or successes) here.

Have fun creating, PatrickL

Hi Royal...

PNG, JPG or BMP images work. No GIFs. I prefer PNG to be able to define transparent areas.

Method 1.

In the ...\AddOnTFX\DPL Moving Logo\ folder, replace the rehanLogo.png with your image file. (name it rehanLogo.png).

Then next time you start MovieMaker, each of the existing effects that used rehanLogo.png will use your new image.

Method 2 (preferred)

Put your image (MyLogo1.png) in the ...\DPL Moving Logo\ folder.
Save the following XML to the ...\AddOnTFX\ folder as MyLogo1.xml.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="5608" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="ShaderTFX.ShaderEffect">

<Effect name="MyLogo1" iconid="0" guid="MyLogo1" ShaderModel="2">
<Param name="ShaderFilename" value="DPL Moving Logo.fx"/>
<Param name="Technique" value="OverlayEffect"/>
<Param name="TextureFile" value="%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\DPL Moving Logo\MyLogo1.png"/>
<Semantics>
<Param name="AlphaOverlay" type="float" value="1.0" />
<Param name="RectOverlay" evaluation="Linear" type="float4" >
<Point time="0.00 " value=" 0.00, 0.85, 0.20, 0.15"/>
<Point time="1.00 " value=" 0.80, 0.85, 0.20, 0.15"/>
</Param>
</Semantics>
</Effect>

</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Modify the RectOverlay prameters to give the size and position and motion you want.
Make the AlphaOverlay value less than 1 to give your logo transparency.

Have Fun, PatrickL

I did what you said (method 1), but it still doesn't work. It just shows up as a black screen.

The Moving Logo installation has to be successful and all of the 7 effects working prior to the replacement of the RehanLogo.png.

If that is the case, then you would see a small black rectangle moving around if the new image is a wrong file type or not named rehanLogo.png. The image must be named rehanLogo.png even if it is a BMP or JPG file or the XML must be changed to the reflect the new image name.

Using Windows Vista here , sorry to report that this effect is not working ,,, black screen on all the 7 effects. I can see all the 7 in the effects window but when add any of those effects to the clip it goes black. I appreciate the effort & hope this problem is rectified.

Hi Q80Y.

ShaderTFX must be installed and operating properly, unexpired or registered, for these effects to function.

Do the effects preview OK but are not OK when added to a clip?

If the result is a moving black rectangle, the problem is a missing/damaged/misnamed logo image.

If the whole screen is black, the problem is a missing/misplaced/misnamed/damaged .FX file.

BTW, ShaderTFX is not yet useable on 64 bit Vista operating systems.

Post here if you want to try to resolve this, PatrickL

Hi Novice1, welcome to the forum and thanks for your interest.

A basic Movie Maker XML introduction can be found at MS XML Intro and there is quite a bit of explanation of the XML parameters of my TFXs on my website.

Assuming you have ShaderTFX and DPL Moving Logos installed, try this for your mermaid logo:

Put this Mermaid Image in the AddOnTFX folder: (RightClick->Save As.... Mermaid.png )

Save this XML as MermaidLogo.xml in AddOnTFX folder:

<!-- ************* Save as "MermaidLogo.xml" in AddOnTFX ********** -->
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8" specialiconfileid="5608" specialiconresourceid="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="ShaderTFX.ShaderEffect">

<Effect name="DPL Logo Mermaid" iconid="1" guid="DPL Logo Mermaid" ShaderModel="2">
<ShaderFilename value="DPL Moving Logo.fx"/>
<Technique value="OverlayEffect"/>
<TextureFile value="%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\Mermaid.png"/>
<Semantics>
<RectMain type="float4" value="0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0" />
<AlphaOverlay type="float" value="1.0" />
<RectOverlay evaluation="Linear" type="float4" >
<Point time="0.00 " value=" 0.70, 0.05, 0.25, 0.40"/>
<Point time="1.00 " value=" 0.00, 0.05, 0.25, 0.40"/>
</RectOverlay>
</Semantics>
</Effect>

</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

It is a starting point. Modify the RectOverlay values and perhaps AlphaOverlay (transparency) to get what you want. The mermaid is fairly good resolution and could be made larger if wanted and/or replaced with your favorite rendition.

Have fun, PatrickL

BTW, I composed a later version of this type of effect, combining Moving Logos, Animated Logos and a few other things like fadein-fadeout, watermarking, flip image etc. view post 196804

I like to use effects for overlays as you can stack up to 6 of them and still put titles over the results.

Here is a little collage combining moving logos and animated logos over a static clip. (could be a video). Logo Effect Collage Video

Novice1, if you are following the post of 7/1, you just need to have the Mermaid.png and MermaidLogo.xml in the AddOnTFX folder.

Then you should have an new effect called DPL Logo Mermaid that has Ariel moving across the screen right to left.

If the effect doesn't show up in the Effects list, there is a problem with the xml.

If the effect is in the Effects list but doesn't preview properly, there is a problem with the image.

Give a little more info and we'll get this working.

OK we are getting there. When you copy all the xml into notepad, make sure there are no missing or extra lines. Exactly all of the purple stuff.

Then when you Save As from Notepad, select Save as type: All Files (*.*): and make the File name: MermaidLogo.xml. Notepad will add a .txt at the end of the file name if type Text Documents (*.txt) is used and MM won't see it as an xml file. BTW, MM has to be closed and restarted to see any new or changed xml files.

Also, if you double click on the MermaidLogo file, it probably will open in InternetExplorer and flag any syntax problems.

Keep working, you will get it and have some fun making your own logos.

Hmm. Right click the xml file icon and select properties. Under the General tab, the Type of file: should be XML File (.xml) and Opens with: should be Internet Explorer. Is that true?

If the name (top line) shows as MermaidLogo.xml.txt or anything else, edit it to be MermaidLogo.xml then click OK.

Now a double click should open it in Internet Explorer and it should show in Movie Maker.

Good luck, PatrickL

Novice1, here is another tack:

Download MermaidLogo.xml (Right click and Save target as ... to AddOnTFX).

If this works, we can go back and find out what was wrong in copying xml to notepad and saving it.

Aha, more progress. That says that your original process of copying the xml file didn't work quite right. We can figure that out later.

Now, the current moving black rectangle is where Ariel should be. Since it is black, the xml can't find the image or the image is corrupted. Or the ShaderTFX trial has expired and it is unregistered?

When you set views in MyComputer to Large Icons in the AddOnTFX folder, it should show the Ariel image (or double click on it and it should open as an image in your default image editor). If it doesn't, the Mermaid.png file is wrong. Be sure you downloaded it with the Save Target As... .

Another possible reason is that the Moving Logo package isn't installed, but I think you said that the samples worked OK with the Rehan logo moving around the screen? Are those samples still working?
