I should be able to whip something up... if you download my Grayscale/Color effects, essentially what you are asking for is something where the color is slightly 'desaturated' or moved towards grayscale. Study the XML code and you'll see that it starts at full color and goes to grayscale. So all you would need to do is to set the point to be slightly below full color and stay there.

Let me know how it goes and if you want some help. I don't have the XML in front of me, but it should be straightforward. If you have problems, I can try to look at it in the next couple days.

Nice job. I'll add a link in the pinned post.

Just a reminder for anyone else trying to use the code above, you must first download the original Color/Grayscale effects. After that you can copy/paste the code above into Notepad and save as desaturate.xml. Save it in your Documents folder first, then copy it to the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder.

Good to see people getting started with XML and making good effects:

Just a tip: the evaluation and time parameters are redundant in the above xml as you are specifying only a single value. The following should work too:

...
<Effect name="Desaturation 90%" iconid="1" guid="Desaturation 90%" comment="Desaturation 90%" shadermodel="2">
<Param name="Animation" value="FX" />
<Param name="FXFile" value="BlaineColorFade.fx" />
<Param name="Technique" value="BlaineColorGrayscale" />
<Semantics>
<Saturation type="float" value="0.1" />
</Semantics>
</Effect>
...

Revised with Rehan's tip, you would have:

<Saturation type="float" value="0.9" />
</Semantics>
</Effect>
<Effect name="Desaturation 20%" iconid="1" guid="Desaturation 20%" comment="Desaturation 20%" shadermodel="2">
<Param name="Animation" value="FX" />

So sorry, I had a typo in Desaturation 20%... it is corrected in the code above. Try copying it again. And be sure you have downloaded the original package of effects.

Considerate Guy......I just tried to use your "desaturation.xlm" code to desaturate a video I have and when I add the effect to the clip, it is all black. Any help you can provide is appreciated.

@Paw Paw
Do you have Blaine's Grayscale/Color effect installed. In order for the desaturatation effect to work you have to have the Grayscale/Color installed as well. If you do have it installed and desaturate still doesn't work I'm afaid I don't know what to tell you, that's a little above my pay grade at the moment.

Grayscale/Color can be found here:

Yes, I have the greyscale effect installed. I did it first and made sure it installed in the correct directory....c\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. The installer placed the files in the Program Files(X86)........AddOnTFX folder but I moved them to the correct folder. Then I copied the XLM code for the desaturation (desaturation.xml) and saved it in a documents folder and then copied it to the same directory as the others. I can see them in my effects but when I click on them, the preview window turns totally black and all I hear is the audio.

Finally figured it out!!!! The .fx file got left in the "Shared" folder of the Program Files(x86) directory. I just moved it to the right one. I thought there were just 2 files but there were 3. Works great!!!
Thanks !!!!! This is just what I needed!
