Pixelate In Effect for Vista
Posted: 20 Aug 2007 08:08 AM
MM 6.0 provides an effect to go from Clear OUT to Pixelated. This effect is the reverse i.e. Pixelated IN to Clear.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="TFX">
<Effect name="PixelateIn dpl" iconid="19" guid="PixelateIn" comment="Pixelate In" shadermodel="2">
<Param name="Animation" value="FX" />
<Param name="FXFile" value="Parity.fx" />
<Param name="Technique" value="Pixelate" />
<Semantics>
<PixelationSize evaluation="Linear" type="float">
<Point time="0.0" value="40.0"/>
<Point time="1.0" value="1.0"/>
</PixelationSize>
</Semantics>
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Save to AddOnTFX as usual.

Enjoy, PatrickL

It's also possible to keep the pixellated level the same throughout a video clip - useful if you want to pixellate for identity protection.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="2.8">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="TFX">
<Effect name="PixelateIn dpl" iconid="19" guid="Pixelate Constantly" comment="Pixelate In" shadermodel="2">
<Param name="Animation" value="FX" />
<Param name="FXFile" value="Parity.fx" />
<Param name="Technique" value="Pixelate" />
<Semantics>
<PixelationSize evaluation="Linear" type="float">
<Point time="0.0" value="5.0"/>
<Point time="1.0" value="5.0"/>
</PixelationSize>
</Semantics>
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

I've changed the start and end parameters to have the same value. The value parameter determines the size of the pixellation - and 5 is enough to pixelate detail whilst keeping the video distinguishable. Of course, play about with the values!

Nice, I'd like to try this but when I copy a .xml file to my addontfx folder, nothing shows up in effects unfortunately.

Make sure you're doing it right.

Copy and paste the xml text to Notepad. Save As, Save as Type "All File" and give it a name with the extension ".xml".
In the Movie Maker Share folder, the AddOnTFX folder name has to be spelt correctly.
Put the xml file there and restart Movie Maker.

Note that the start of the xml tells you whether it's for XP (WMM2) or Vista (WMM6). XP is 1.0 and Vista 2.8. The two aren't interchangeable and won't work for the other.
