Danielle's Frames in Vista
Posted: 17 Mar 2007 02:13 PM
Here is a way to use Danielle's neat frames in Vista.
See Danielle Post

Create a folder called "Danielle Frames" in AddOnTFX folder in Moviemaker.

Download two Danielle frames to that folder. i.e. Right click on the link and "Save Target As..."
BlueBubbles
Haloween Orange

Put the following XML in a file called DanielleFrames.xml and save the file to the AddOnTFX folder. Now when you start Moviemaker you will have 2 new Titles "Frame Blue Bubbles" and "Frame Haloween" and a new Effect called "DPL - 70% DanielleFrames".

Add a Frame title to your movie (put a space in the text field), and stretch it as desired. Your pictures and movies will now be to big for the frame so apply the "DPL - 70% DanielleFrames" Effect to each image and they will approximately fit the frame aperature.

Thanks considerate_guy for the Title Image idea and Rehan for the Shrink idea.

Have Fun!! PatrickL

For any other of Danielle's Frames you download, just insert additional

<Title name="Frame Blue Bubbles" guid="Blue Bubbles" iconid="13" >
...
<Param name="LogoBitmapFilename" value="AddOnTFX\Danielle Frames\DaniellesBlueBubbles.png" />
...
</Title>

in the XML file, editing names as appropriate.

Upon further reflectionBig Smile

Vista MM6 does a great job of mixing source material with different aspect ratios.
The above XML only handles the case where source and rendering are the same.

To handle 4:3 (N) source in 16:9 (W) rendering or 16:9 source in 4:3 rendering with letterboxing and no clipping, the following XML works.

1. If source and render are the same (NN or WW) use 70% effect
2 If source and render are different use 70% NW or WN effect as appropriate.
3. Put any pans or zooms before the Shrink effect

I prefer a square Frame source image (e.g. a 800x800 image with a centered 560x560 aperature fits this 70% shrink nicely. This results in narrower horizontal members than vertical members, but the letterboxing fits perfectly with no clipping. Looks OK to me and gives pretty good quality up through HD 1080p rendering. Some of Nick's 512x512 frames work pretty good. Nick's Frames

4. Add the frame with the chosen Frame Title e.g. Frame Danielle Blue Bubbles

Unfortunately, you must make at least one rerendering pass to get a Frame and some standard titleing in the same production. Wish Rehan's PIP+ worked here, then the Frames could be an effect and just added to the Shrink effects.

Danielle's frames work pretty good albeit with some clipping and extra letterboxing. Hope Daneille or someone else with Art in the genes (definitely not meEmbarassed) will make some cool square frames for us all.

Have Fun, Patrick

<!--
Frame Titles & 70% Shrink Effects
70% Shrink for use with mixed aspect ratio source material
Use 70% Shrink for 16:9 (W) source in 16:9 rendering
or 4:3 (N) source in 4:3 rendering
Use 70% NW for 4:3 source in 16:9 rendering
Use 70% WN for 16:9 source in 4:3 rendering
1/70% = 1.43 so set shrink value to -(1.43-1)/2 = -0.215 & 1/70% = 1.43
Change the 70% for different frame aperature widths.
This is set up for a square frame image with a 70% border.
e.g. 800x800 with a centered 560x560 aperature
Put any Pan/Zoom effects before the shrink effect
- Works fair with Danielle's non square frames - some clipping, some letterboxing

Here are six very narrow Frame Titles and the appropriate 95%Shrink Effects for Vista. Wood, Chalk etc. They are fairly unobtrusive, and nicely Highlight any Pan/Zoom effects.

Add the Frame as a Title, and then Shrink the source image with the DPL 95% Effect. Also set up for 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio sources mixed. Use DPL 95% NW or DPL 95% WN

DPL Small Frames Vista Installer

Right Click, Save Target As..., Then run the MSI installer file - needs Administor Privilege. Uninstall with the Uninstall Icon, or from the Control Panel.

EnjoyCool, Patrick

I liked Blaine's technique for frames which doesn't need a shrink effect. This works great for a frame image with an aperature aspect ratio the same as the whole image aspect ratio. My small frames fit that criteria.

Here is an updated version of DPL Small Frames Vista Installer . Uninstall the previous version, then run this msi file.

Now, you don't have to add a shrink effect on each image. Just add the frame and stretch it to the right length. There is a version for both Vista and XP in this installer. Just install, and Moviemaker will ignore the one not meant for it.

You can't use this technique on Danielle's frames because this code draws the shrunk image on top of the frame image.

EnjoyCool, Patrick

The XML Code for Danielle's frames is for Vista MM 6.0 only. Her original post has XML Code for XP MM 2.0.

The DPL Frames installer has the images and XML code for both Vista MM 6.0 and XP MM 2.0. The installer will install both XML's and MovieMaker will ignore the one not meant for it.
