Lost effects and transitions
Posted: 01 Sep 2005 01:24 PM
Hello ,
( sorry for my english )
A few month ago , a lot off my effects and transitions disappeared suddenly .
I tried to copy other DLL's , to register the DLL's , to eliminate somme spyware ,
to desactivate the codecs .... like it is said on the forums .
Nothing change anything .
So , I tried to créate other effects and transitions by saving XML files in the
ADDONTFX folder . Then , some were working well and others didn't
Searching the reason why , I discovered that some "guids" were missing in the
Registry . By creating manualy the registry key and the values , everything returns normal .
All my transitions and effects are back .
You can found the list off the "guids " at this adress =
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwmt/html/moviemakersfx.asp.

Guids missing were in this 2 registry folder :
for transitions =
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{CC7BFB43-F175-11D1-A392-00E0291F3959}\

For effects =
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{CC7BFB42-F175-11D1-A392-00E0291F3959}\

To create values , I took exemple on the other " guids "
If this can help anybody ...

Thanks for this piece of info... I thanked you on newsgroup too for sharing your findings.

I have started to proble into this line of investigation... Here are some of my experiments and findings:

Made a backup of the said registry entries and then deleted a few of the effects and transition GUID entries to see what happens.... (please dont attempt it at home folks !!!). When I started the movie maker, unfortunately nothing bad happened. The effects and transitions were still present. Then I opened the registry and... it seems the deleted entries were restored automatically...

This gave me an idea that for the affected PCs maybe somehow the permissions of these entries or the subtree get messed up and the said user no longer can write to these registry subtree (a possible hallmark of an overly active anti-spyware...) then it wont be able to self-restore as it normlly does. I deleted the entries again and then revoked the user permissions for the said tree and restarted movie maker... Lo and behold: all my effects and transitions were wiped away.... Hoorrayyy... i reproduced the problem exactly as reported by many users.

Now researching for a simple remedy.... seems it may be in sight soon...

Finally I have a working solution:

Download and run the following two registry files:

missing_transitions.zip
missing_effects.zip

Download and extract to a temp folder. Double click the extracted .reg file to run.

If you have Firefox, you may have to reset IE as your default browser. If IE is not the default browser, the access to some files (including .reg) is restricted in SP2.

Also you may have to completely disable your antivirus software as some of them restrict access to reg files.

Sometimes the antivirus/antispyware is super active and it monitors any changes to the registry and silently reset the changes. This is generally good but some programs require to change the registry entries not directly related to them. In particular Movie Maker requires read/write access to following registry branch:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum]

If the unrestricted access is not available then effects and transitions do not function in movie maker.

Once again I thank PP for the hint.

Bonjour Vincent ,

A+

I stopped the antivirus and checked well the permissions on the register. In all the ways the problem is not there. Indeed the reg files add well the keys in the register, but alas these keys disappear when I launch movie maker. is the problem there, why movie maker erases the keys which I added? A+ Vincent

I tried all these suggestions on the web. This one from MS support fixed all my problems. (I only had to do steps 1 & 2 to fix my problems.)

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. In the opened window, run the following command:

regsvr32 Msxml3.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 Msxml.dll

If the issue persists after we run the above commands, please refer to the next step.

3. Install MSXML 3.0 SP5 from the following link:

Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5)

To see "Babelfish" in action, you can find the Altavista "Babelfish" translator here.

Or if you want to have some real fun with machine-generated translations, my favorite site is Lost in Translation. It takes whatever you type, uses the babelfish engine several times, each time in a different language. So it might go from English, to French, to English, to German, to English, to Spanish, to English, to Italian, to English. The resulting phrase rarely looks anything like the original. Here's one attempt with a familiar phrase:

Original English Text:
Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was white as snow.

Translated back to English:
The wool there was a white small lamb in Mary as a snow.

Translated back to English:
Wool there is a white small lamb takes the snow in Mary.

Mary.

Translated back to English:
The wool there is small white catches of a lamb snow in Mary.

Mary.

Translated back to English:
Wool is small white interlocks of a lamb snow there in Mary.

dell'agnello là in Mary.

Translated back to English:
The wool is small switches of emergency here white men of one snow of
the lamb in Mary.

Translated back to English:
The wool is interrupting small here of the white men of the emergency
of a snow of the lamb in Mary.

Translated back to English:
The wool is small interruption of the white men of the emergency of a
snow of the lamb in Maria here.

Note: the "Lost in Translation" site can be slow depending on whether it gets quick replies back from Babelfish. And sometimes it will outright fail, so be patient.

Just click on the two .reg files in the third post and that should restore the registry entries related to transitions and effects. You'll need full rights to your computer to install programs / update the registry.

I have run the registry files and then ran regedit and verified they were successful. The GUID entries were there. I then ran Movie Maker and tried the Video Transitions pane and it was blank. I re-checked regedit and the entries had been deleted. It seems that Movie Maker is deleting those registry entries.

Any ideas?

Also, have you disabled any antivirus software that might be "protecting" the registry when you do the update.

Yup logged in with Admin rights. I have disabled all virus protection. I verified the entries by looking at the registry after I run the file and the GUIDs are there. After I run Movie Maker the parent key name:

{CC7BFB42-F175-11D1-A392-00E0291F3959}

is still there but the sub keys with all the GUIDs have disappeared. This only happens after I run Movie Maker and try the Video Transitions pane.

Narcosis, I have had another user with similar issue before. I was able to offer him a possible workaround... This involves directly tinkering the registry... so for anybody else who doesnt know what he/she is doing... do not try it, please!

Summary of Workaround: Basically you can remove write access to this entry for your account. In your machine's default Administrator account populate the registry entry by executing the above two files and then run Movie Maker in your account. WMM shouldn't be able to delete the entries because of access restrictions.

If you are not sure how to do these steps then you can contact me for details.

Hey Rehan thanks for the suggestion. I changed the permissions for that key and the sub keys and they are no longer being deleted by Movie Maker. Now when I hit video transitions the program thinks for a minute and then I get the microsoft send error report box. After I click dont send the program crashes.

The version of Movie Maker I am running is:

2.0.3312.0

It's funny be MM really does not want the registry entries there. :D

Thanks for the responses you too Considerate any other ideas will be attempted.

I have been using windows movie maker for a while, and used all of its effects and transitions that came with the original package.

However, recently I have lost all of the original transitions and effects.

I have also purchased "plus! digital edition" and its transitions and effects do not appear in movie maker.

In my AddOnTFX folder, i have the plug ins for MetaCreations and Adorage, and both appear in movie maker. The originals, "plus!", and winterFunPack does not (those plug ins are also in the same folder).

i have tried "post 3", still no solution.

I was very pleased to find this topic as I've been suffering from the same problem.
I have three machines that I can see all the transitions but one machine where no transitions show up, and two video effects are displayed.

I even purchased the Microsoft media PLUS! which was suppose to add 50 transitions.
Nothing!

Using regedit, I did look up
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum
and found that both GUID's were listed.
If there are subkeys under the two mentioned here I don't have them.

The weird problem is...
when I click on the .reg urls something strange happens.
Instead of getting a warning, or a yellow bar asking if I want to allow this content, it tries to load the .reg file as some kind of Quicktime file.

I found this so far on two machines.
I checked my file type association and everything there looks ok.
I just checked other .reg files I've uploaded and they work normally.

Anyone else experience this?
Is there anything else in the .reg files beside the top level GUID key?
If so, can someone post the text of the reg file?

Thanks,
Bill Pytlovany

I am not sure why the .reg files are going to quicktime. This must be something strangely configured on my ISP, I guess.

But dont worry, try these zipped up versions of the reg files:

missing_effects.zip
missing_transitions.zip

Save, extract and then double click the .reg files to merge with the registry. To see the contents, use Windows Notepad to open these. I think these files are unicode text files, other text editors may not be able to edit/view them properly.

Also, I reinstalled digital media edition for XP, and still no additional effects and transitions appeared.

Rehan,

Thank you for reposting the .reg files. I still don't have a clue why my machine opened Quicktime but the zipped versions worked fine.

Unforunately, still no luck. I've got SP2, I re-registered the DLL mentioned here but still no transitions.

I was hoping to just reinstall Move Maker 2.1 but the only link I found online combine it with the SP2 update. According to Windows, I have SP2 so it won't let me just update or repair any peice of it. I even went to Add/Remove programs to see if Movie Maker was listed in the "Add/Remove Windows Components" but it's not there.

Any possibility, you know of a Microsoft link to just downloading Move Maker 2.1?

If I figure out a solution I'll let you know. If you figure it out first, I'll be clicking on your PayPal button. ;)

Thanks again,
Bill

The Problem Solving > Checklist page of my site has a section about 'Disappearing Video Transitions and Effects'... it's toward the bottom of the page.... nothing really conclusive about why they disappear and why they don't come back.

That assumes the systems had them in the first place and then lost them.... transitions and effects were not in version 1 of Movie Maker.

see also the Setup Movie Maker > MM2.0 and MM2.1 pages of my site to take steps to check your installed files to be sure they are the right revisions, and to fix a broken installation.

I think in your case it is simpler. You have just re-installed windows xp? In this case all you have to do is install SP2. The WMM that comes with original instal of XP is 1.x which did not have transitions and effects.
