Regit... I hadn't seen your post until now, as I don't read them all. My website's Setup MM2 in XP > MM2.1 page has all of my notes about getting that version running.
You can check the software restriction policies in place by
Click Start, then Run, Type secpol.msc, then click OK.
Go to the Help file in the Microsoft Management Console that opens.... the Software Restrictions Policies > Troubleshooting section covers your message. |

Try downloading the file on this page and then running it; this should re-install Service Pack 3 and version 2.1 of Movie Maker. |

I use Windows Movie Maker for Vista on a Dell laptop running Windows 7. (Live Movie Maker just doesn't cut it for me.) I have a problem. WMM glitches randomly with this version. I have to go into Task Manager to close it. Here's a screencap of the glitch:

Try doing a System Restore back to a date before you installed that version. If you still have missing transitions and effects in Movie Maker after doing that, try downlaoding and running this program to manually re-install Service Pack 3. |

Every time I try to drag a clip into the storyboard I get this error:

I'm running windows xp me with service pack 3 installed on an hp, and captured files via s-video cable in windows movie maker 2.1 (version 5.1 update) and the video plays fine but no audio is played. I checked preferences and files show 'video with audio' and the audio section shows audio information, and when I capture the audio plays on the sony handycam device (I can hear it). I can play I-tunes audio, and I had audio on high during capture, but no luck. I opened file in Media Player and no ... |

Hey all...
Been dealing with this for a while and nothing has worked (short of chucking the computer out the window, which has been very tempting).
Basically, I have about a 7 minute video that plays perfectly fine in both storyboard and timeline, but when it's published, no matter what the format, there are two areas where the video/audio will go blank until the next clip. Counter keeps running, but can't see or hear anything.

Welcome to the forums.
Try going to "Tools > Options > Compatibility" in Movie Maker and unchecking all the filters ending in .ax and see if that helps. If it doesn't, check what codecs were used to encode your wmv files by downloading and running them in a free utility called GSpot. See PapaJohn's Newsletter #68 and ... |

There's not a separate download for version 6.0 (the versions that comes with Vista) of Movie Maker.
Actually, it might be your avi files. That's because avi is what is known as a container format and whether it will work in Movie Maker depends on the codecs used to encode the video and audio inside that avi container. There are hundreds of codecs that can be used with the avi container. Thus, while some avi files will work fine in Movie Maker, many others will not.

I have used Movie Maker 2.6 with Windows Vista to make several videos of my photos with no problem. I upgraded to Windows 7, but cannot remember if I actually published a movie since the conversion.

I'm running Windows 7.
Problem 1: WMM was crashing after attempting to add any videos to the project. I read that this could be because of the filters, however, I could not locate the filters anywhere. I supposed this is because you can't access them in the most recent version of WMM. So I have now downloaded WMM2.6 and the program is no longer crashing (I would like to use the more recent version of WMM if someone has some suggestions on how I could do this..?)

Try running the System File Checker; see this article for the details on how to do that.
Also, is my understanding correct that you couldn't publish a movie when you had just a single title and your wma file on the timeline? Which versions of Vista and Movie Maker are you using and do you have any codec packs/bundles installed on your system? |

FYI, I thought you had Vista as "publishing" a movie is a term used in the Vista version of Movie Maker but not the Windows XP version.

Thanks for your help, Neophyte. I don't think there's a compatibility problem. I've been using a combination of .wmv and .asf all along without a hiccup. I tried turning filters on and off without success.
What I wasn't aware of in my first post was another new problem...probably not a coincidence. When I close the WMM program now, I can't reopen it again without either re-booting my computer or going into the task manager and deleting the moviemk.exe process. On a few ... |

Hi,
I have the Windows Vista version of Movie Maker, and I have a movie that is about 30 minutes long and when I try to publish it to my computer, it freezes at approximately 58% and shuts down and displays a message saying "Another user is running windows movie maker on this computer. Please close the other program before restarting this one". There's only one problem...I AM THE ONLY USER ON THIS COMPUTER. Does anybody know why my movie won't publish?? |

I am new to Movie Making , I have just aquired 3 HP Laptops, 2 running WINDOWS XP Home Edition SP-3 and 1 runing WINDOWS XP Media Center Edition SP3.
All 3 have same version of Windows Movie Maker however only the "media center" gives me the DVD Burn and CD Burn Options...the other 2 only give me CD Burn Option.
Can I upgrade WMM on the 2 to also burn DVDs ???

You say they just disappeared after you installed a new Windows Movie Maker program.... as Microsoft doesn't provide the latest v2.1 of Movie Maker separate from the full Windows XP SP2 update.... what program did you get and install from who or where?
Going around the Microsoft updates can result in issues... even worse than those you can be in when using the Microsoft provided updates. You might need to sort out your files and see what version you're running. See the Setup ... |

would you go to your c:\Windows\System32 folder and tell us the version of qedit.dll you have... right click on it > Properties > Version tab

While the file type may not have changed, the codecs used to encode the video and audio in those files may have changed and those codecs could be causing the problem. After converting my video from MPEG files off the camcorder to WMV files using one of PapaJohn's custom profiles, if I split a clip in a collection, the part after the split won't preview. The first part of the clip will. Any ideas why?
I'm running version 2.5 (the XP Media Center version) on XP.
The files originally came from a Canon FS20 camcorder. I used the Pixela Imagemixer software to get the files off the camcorder and then read them into Movie Maker ... |
